Hi all, I was really hoping to get the Lexus CT200h but being that I need a car now and that the Lexus won't be available until 2011 I am happy to get the Prius instead. My question is about the solar panel. I live in a HOT and sunny area so I was thinking this would be great. Is the added weight worth it? Does it charge the battery while driving or does it only power the fan? Will I still be able to upgrade my wheels later in the future? Drive around a full car load of friends? Whats the deal with that? Sorry for all the questions but I would love to hear your experiences both pros and cons about the roof. Thanks!!
The panels do not charge the battery, it only powers the ventilation fan while the car is parked and the system is activated. I think the added weight is negligible. Those who live in hot areas like Arizona like the system. Is it perfect or does it make the car feel cold? No, but they say it does keep the car at a much more manageable temperature upon entering. There are many people on here who have upgraded their rims/wheels on their 2010's. Do a quick search and you'll find many results some of which include pictures.
Weight remains the same, since you get only 15 inch rims when you order the solar panel instead of the 17 inch ones...
The total weight capacity of the car does not change with the solar roof. I find it quite nice to have, first and foremost to let more light in all the time, even when it's closed. When it's really hot it helps to clear the hot air out faster because you can let the hot air out at the top as well as opening all the windows. The solar-powered fan does keep the temperature from skyrocketing if you park in the sun which also helps keep the car cooler for when you first get in.
