I just hit the 1000 mile mark, when should the dealership provide maintenance? I heard them say it was at 5000 miles. Should I be performing any other service? (tire pressure, oil etc)

My dealer changed the oil at 1000. I did not pay for it.

I need to call them if they will do it at 6,000 now.

If only there was an official Toyota document that was provided when you took delivery of the car, that detailed what maintenance was recommended and when.

    Oh, wait--there is. :D

Have you read the warranty/maintenance booklet? ;)

My dealer told me first service was at 10k. They set me up for the appointment when we first picked up the car (approximate date, obviously)

I suggest you read the warranty/maintenance booklet that came with your car. The oil service interval is now 10K miles, but the first recommended service is at 5K.

I think some of the confusion here has to do with the fact that Toyota has extended the oil change interval from the original 5K to 10K with the use of 0W20 synthetic oil.

They still recommend a 5K service interval to rotate tires and make basic inspections, fluid level checks, etc. Of course, you can do these yourself if you are inclined to do so.

What does your maintenance manual say about these service intervals? Has it been updated to show the new oil change interval?

You also need to determine if you want to rotate your tires every 5K miles or wait 10K to go along with the oil change.

When I took delivery last June, the oil service interval was 5K miles, which was the same as the tire rotation, brake inspection, etc. interval. Some time later, Toyota changed the recommended interval for oil service (only) to 10K. They mailed me a new warranty/maintenance booklet which reflected the changes. And I'm sure new cars delivered since then also have booklets that reflect the changes.

My point was, there is an official Toyota document provided when you take delivery of the car. If people would only read it, they'd avoid being misinformed by ignorant dealers, and not have to post these silly questions.

    As the saying goes...RTFM. ;)

My dealer wanted to check my car at 1,000 miles/1 month, so they set that up when I took the car home. They didn't change the oil, that I know of, but it was free. They said they just wanted to make sure everyhting was working alright. They then wanted to service it every 5,000 miles, but Toyota sent me an updated maintenance guide, which said every 10,000 miles.

    It's not every 10K miles.

If you check the updated maintenance booklet (I've attached it below), scheduled maintenance is still every 5K miles--but oil service interval is extended to 10K miles.

I took delivery of my 2010 on May 1, 2010. The manual in the car still gives the 5,000 mile oil change schedule. When I got my free
2 year maintenance contract, the coupons showed the tire rotation at 5,000 and the oil change at 10,000. I checked with the dealer and they said that the synthetic oil did not need to be changed more often than 10,000.

    Stream,

Your point is well taken about RTFM !! The point is that even the new manual can be confusing to the new buyers as to when the first service is, 5K or 10K. If you look at TFM (!!), it will tell you 5K for tire rotation, fluid level checks, etc. Then the oil change is at 10K. So, the first service according to the manual is 5K.

So, why do we just not answer the OP's question since it can be confusing.

This is one of the reasons I really blasted Toyota on the quality survey. At the time I bought the Prius in March, it was like they were making it up as they went along.

Apparently I wasn't the only one thinking this way. News headlines, which priuschat hasn't mentioned, say that Toyota has dropped to the middle of the pack in customer satisfaction quality surveys.

Don't say I'm off base. Address it to the thousands of others who gave bad marks on their surveys.

Toyota, just give oil changes per the manual interval. It's as simple as that. Stop trying to save a few bucks here and there, pissing off your customer base in the process.

(Like Toyota listens to their customers.)

Yes, Stream is correct. I got the free 24 mo//25K maintenance when I bought my 2010 in March. Just did the 5K maintenance, the 0W20 synthetic oil change interval is 10K miles. I also got them to turn off the reverse beeping and headlights off (basically, the headlight switch stays on and turns off when the car is stopped and the drivers door opens).
