Oil change at 5K

It doesn't hurt to so it more often than required but doing so may waste your money and also producing more dirty oil for the environment. I think doing it at least twice a year is the minimum regardless of its odemeter reading. It's not a bad thing to change it the first time at 5K. Your dealer would be the only one to say whether they would accept the coupon or not. I can't think of any reason that they won't accept it. Afterall, the purpose of giving you the coupon is to make sure you develop a habit of going back to them instead of someone else.
The answer for your second question for reseting the maintenance reminder is Yes. There are many discussion in this forum and is also mentioned in the Owner's Manual.

 

If you have the FREE 2-year maintenance plan, then does Toyota pay for the 5k mile oil changes (for 2 years)? Or do they only pay for 10k? Is the OEM oil that is in the Prius from factory synthetic or regular??

It is 10K with 0W20 synthetic oil. I like to do a first oil change early and would go ahead with the 5K oil change, then 10K, and every 10K from then on.

May be a waste of money but maybe not, so I do it. I do my own but my dealer only charges about $20 for an oil & filter change (no other maintenance) if the customer brings the oil and they supply the filter. Most of us on this site use Mobil 1 or Toyota oil but there are other brands of synthetic 0W20 available now.

 

Since the oil/filter service interval was changed to 10K miles prior to the 2 year free maintenance promotion, I'll go out on a limb and guess they'll only cover factory recommended maintenance--and for oil/filter, that's 10K miles.

The factory fill is 0W-20 synthetic.

 

$20 for a synthetic oil change is a great price.

 

You have to supply your own oil at that price, if they supply the oil it's $50 or more.

 

One dealer in the bay area (Melody) sent me an email last week, and one special was $24.95 (+$15 for synthetic) for oil/filter service, tire rotation & inspection. Also tire rotation & brake inspection for $8.88.

Too bad I had the 5K service performed 2 months ago for $70.

 

With that dealer I'd make sure they actually do the maintenance they say they will. Heads up.

 

So, they gave me the 24 month free maintenance when I bought the car and gave me, I think, 5 service coupons. I took the car in today for its first 5000 mile interval. The service guy tried to tell me that Toyota changed the requirement to 10,000 miles for the oil-change and that they would just be rotating the tires. I knew that from reading this forum. However, I showed him that the coupon said 5,000 miles and it listed what they were supposed to do on the back. At least on my coupons it says lube and "oil-change". I told him I wanted the oil-change, and that Toyota wasn't allowed to change its mind. He made some phone calls and finally agreed. Thus they replaced the filter, gasket, and 5 quarts of synthetic oil (the part number is listed as 00279-DRM0W 0W20 synthetic). Are the coupons they gave me different from what other folks are getting, or was I just successful at being pushy?

 

No coupons here. I was just "told" about the free maintenance program.

 

I was "given" the "2-year" free maintenance when I purchased my car in April 2010. The coupons are printed with specific mileage; the oil changes being @ 5,000 mile intervals. The "free" maintenance is effectively for 30,000 miles, not 2 years. I will insist that the oil be changed at 5,000 mile intervals, just as printed on the coupons. I have rebuilt engines myself, and I like the results of frequent oil changes. As I drive in heavy stop-and-go traffic 10,000 miles is too long for me to wait to change oil. Synthetic or otherwise.

A second owner with the free maintenance with 5000 mile changes? I feel seriously gypped since mine are only offered every 10,000 miles, so a total of 2 free changes. This especially makes little sense since my Prius was purchased in March (as compared to a month later by pixelmixer).

Are your coupons from your purchasing dealer? Mine are from the purchasing dealer, but I purchased through a broker. The purchasing dealer is too far away to go to, so I'll use them at a local dealer. I wouldn't be happy with 10k intervals either.

 

They have the dealer's name on them but I believe they came in the mail from Toyota. The service dude said that they were worth $30 worth of service/each which was enough for an oil change and according to the invoice they used 0W20 synthetic, so that was all fine with me.

I purchased through the local dealer but the coupons came in the mail via Toyota Autocare out of Houston, TX. "Prepaid Maintenance Program" and "Toyota Autocare" are printed on the front.

I imagine it depends on which locale you purchased in unless all coupons are issued by the Houston location.

 

Bought mine in March. No coupons--dealer gave me a certificate for free 24 month scheduled maintanence. Went early (3500 miles) dealer told me of the change to 10K. He said to bring it back at 5K for first scheduled to be completed. Remains to be seen it I or he will pay for an oil change at that time.

 

I got the coupons from "fidelity" maintenance program or something like that.

Local dealer service writer did try to give me push back when I went for 5K mile oil change and tire rotation. They said they will do only 10K oil change and for now they will reset indicator and do tire rotation. I insisted that back of coupon said to do what ever required at 5K and my vehicle computer says go do oil change so they have to do it. They finally agreed and did il change with 0W20 and tire roation with a total cost of $60.

When it hits 10K they said they do no change oil and will simply reset computer. I have to see then or I will change oil myself.
