Hello, I just purchased a 2009 Prius yesterday with 13k miles on it. Absolutely love the car. Two things I don't like: 1. No aux input (argggg!) 2. No factory NAV. I ordered a Soundgate unit to allow iPhone connectivity so that basically takes care of problem 1. I've done some search and and pick an OEM NAV unit from used for $485 locally. I searched this forum and found the some responses that can basically be summed up as "a swap can be done but is not cost effective". My question is, what is involved with the swap. Is all the wiring present in the harness of a Prius with no NAV from the factory? Is it a matter of changing around some pins on the factory harness? Any info would be helpful. I have a full shop and lots of time. Thanks.
The wiring harness will not be there. Also, there is an antenna and other components, such as the DVD player, etc. that make the install of an OEM NAV system in a non-NAV Prius very difficult. Just go buy a good portable NAV. The map updates are a lot cheaper.
Honestly, the factory Nav isn't that great and you can buy a good aftermarket unit for the price of the Toyota Nav update.
I installed the OEM Nav in our '08 package 2. You are going to need a lot of other parts than just the nav computer. You will need the following parts: Overhead console with microphone. Steering wheel controls with "Map" button. MFD with nav buttons JBL 6 disk radio JBL amplifier Nav computer Nav antenna (optional) JBL door and dash speakers You will also need to construct the harness that go to the nav computer, the JBL amp, the door tweeters, the dash speaker, and the overhead microphone. Having access to a donor car for the harnesses would be helpful if you don't think you can make the harnesses yourself. Also you need to make sure to not get parts and wiring from an 04-05 since they are not the same as you 09.
Jellowslug. Thank you, that was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you! Where did you get the appropriate connectors for the harness you made? Any pics or diagrams you still have around would be awesome and greatly appreciated.
I have a list of all the connector housing part numbers for every connector on the car. The connector housings are cheap from Toyota (around $5 each). I also purchased a body wiring harness from a late model Toyota (a Corolla I think) to harvest the pins for the connectors. You will also need the wiring diagrams for both the base model car and one for one with nav/JBL. send me a PM and I can go into more detail.
