It's a very bad idea to put your home address in the nav system. If your car is stolen, they can drive to your house and use homelink to open the garage door. They can then drop the door and break in at their convenience. There won't even be a strange car in the driveway to alert neighbors.

I put in an intersection a few blocks away as my home address.

Had to think about this a second. Yep, my home address is set in my GPS (my wife did it because she likes the chime it makes when we get home). My home address is also listed on the net...

So, yes, they could steal the car (well, they'd have to tow it and then figure out how to bypass the smart key to get the computer to come up...then they could look it up on the GPS). Or, they could just look me up...

Then, they could drive to my house. In another car (see smart key...)

First they hit my gate. Well, yeah. They can get past that.

Then they can open the garage door.

Well, they can if the dogs don't get 'em first <grin>.

Oh, then the alarm goes off (and it's monitored).

Even better if I'm home... Me and Smith/Wesson would love to discuss the car with 'em.

Frankly, they're better off going to a home in an isolated area and tossing a rock through a window...

If your car IS stolen and you worry about this, you can flush all the codes easily from your opener (usually some combo on the program button), and just unplug it until you get time to 'fix' it.

I highly recommend homes have alarm systems that are monitored... Been broken into and no matter how it's no fun. Also makes my wife more comfortable when she's there by itself, because she can 'panic' the alarm (well, ummm, and she has her own gun...)

    Did I mention I'm from Texas <grin>...

PS: I HATE the GPS in the Prius. Voice nav is a joke. It's not that useful, and updates are EXPENSIVE. And, I like sitting in the house programming my Magellen GPS before trip (also can connect to computer). Note I DON'T leave that in the car...

After I posted that, I wondered just how hard it is to steal a Prius with the smart key system. But then I remembered the open cubbies at my gym and the chance of stealing a woman's purse with the key in it.

There was recently a raft of home breakins in a high-end Austin subdivision. It seems that folks were leaving their cars UNLOCKED in the drive way. The crooks were opening the garage door and stealing stuff while the owners slept. At least that's what the TV news claimed.

I'm from Texas and my house is also protected by a couple of dogs - heaven help 'em - the Jack will rip them apart and the Lab will lick them to death. The secondary defenses are also in place.

BAllanJ: Sure, I use the nav system to get home when I've gone someplace new or when I just want to have a running estimate of how much longer it will be before I get home. After being married for 36 years, having a woman telling me that I'm going to have to make a right turn soon is very comforting.

OK... I don't actually use mine (in my phone) for route planning much... more as a map with a "you are here" on it. More situational awareness, if you will.

One thing I like since it's on my phone is to drop a landmark when exiting my car when out of town to make it easier to find my car later... I know, that's as silly as using it to find home.

    <off topic>

It is kind of interesting the amount of info we stick in devices that go in our pockets. Like, how many folks really lock their phone...

You could hack the code for the RFID tag in the key (you can find tools for that online). Kinda a techy thing, but not impossible.

Just to be redundant, please, folks, put an alarm in your home. It's not what you lose in a burglary that's bad - it's the loss of your own personal feeling of security...

This mitigates most of the risk for this...

I also like the sign with a a dobie that says "I can make it to the fence in 3 seconds... can you?" :focus:

I had been using 4 generations of TomTom before and now have the built-in in my new Prius. The TomTom's had, at least here in Europe, all the max speeds of all roads (and you can set a warning signal). In addition it has all the actual speeds of the main roads for the day of the week and the time of the day in its database, so the calculation of the best route and the actual time of arrival are very much improved (they call this 'IQ routes' technology). And they have a free 'Map Share' web service, where you can download map corrections contributed by users and checked by TomTom. And a more realistic 3D display, for example, with actual pictures of signs above the road at crossings, etc.

Okay, I like that it is built-in, the big screen,.. But since the beginning of this year new cars are delivered with a new version of the maps and there is still no sign of Toyota to make these available to buyers of last year cars.
