Hi all, The default when putting the car in 'P' is to have all doors unlock automatically. I really don't like this and have been trying to understand just WHAT the owner's manual is talking about when it explains changing the default action when the car is placed in 'P'. Has anyone else been able to follow these directions, and if so, would you mind explaining it to me? Thanks! P.S. what I am ideally trying to do is to reprogram the door locks so that they STAY LOCKED after the car is put in park ('P'). Thanks!!!
Hi I wanted the same thing and took it to my dealer who fixed it in under 5 minutes. I don't believe you can change it yourself. Edit: The dealer hooked up a laptop to make the change, it plugs in just under the steering column. Pretty easy and fast fix. Oh yes, he didn't charge anything either.
There are 3 settings Default - Shift out of Park = lock, Shift into Park = unlock Option 1 - Shift out of Park = lock, Open driver's door = unlock (this is the one you want, right?) Option 2 - Speed sensitive In older Toyota models, it is possible to program it yourself by pressing the LOCK and PANIC button simultaneously. I haven't tried it with the Gen 3.
I think at the dealer they have the option of also changing these settings using a specialized laptop application, but the user guide does give instructions on how the owner can make the changes. I had a Camry a few years back and had no trouble changing many of the default settings by following the same type of instructions in the owners manual. For some reason though the Prius instructions are not very easy to follow -- to me anyway.
The dealer can use a laptop application from Toyota to do it eaiser, granted, but if you go to section in the Owners Manual entitled: Automatic door locking and unlocking systems: Setting and canceling the functions -- you will find the sequence of steps to undo and redo factory settings -- This is in SECTION 1-3, Pages 69 and 70 in the U.S. Owners Manual. There is also a way to use the remote (FOB) to open the back door (hatch) from outside the car ... I aint figured that out yet either ... anyone else firgure this out? Thanks!
Yes, option #1, exactly! This is what is outlined in the Owners Manual as being an option that the owner can perform. Also, how do you use the remote to open the back door (hatch) from outside the car?
Have you tried the procedure in the manual? For the remote, if you press the unlock button on the FOB it will unlock all of the doors like most other remote key unlock FOBs. Then you open the hatch with the rubber button like normal.
Yes I have. Like I said in my message that started this thread, " ... have been trying to understand just WHAT the owner's manual is talking about when it explains changing the default action when the car is placed in 'P'. " What I'm looking for here is someone who has successfully tried the procedure in the manual and can explain it to me better than the manual explains it.
Well that should be almost any person on earth. Hard to believe you could cut down a tree and produce this many books with this many pages and be this bad at writing directions. They apparently think putting a picture of something and then labeling it is giving directions for how to use it.
I agree that the manual is not very easy to understand AND I have not done this myself, but reading the manual I would interpret this to mean the following: Step 1) Close all the doors and switch the “POWER” switch to ON mode. (Perform Step 2 A & B within 20 seconds.)STEP Step 2A) To change the shifting to Park from unlock to remain locked: Press P (Park) button AND the Door Unlock button for 5 seconds - this should cancel the original setting of unlocking the door when pressing Park, which should then convert to remaining locked. Step 2B ) To change the unlock function to opening the driver's door within 10 seconds of powering down: Shift lever to N AND press the Door Unlock button for 5 seconds - this should cancel the original setting of doing nothing when opening the driver's door, which should covert to unlocking the doors. Try this. If this does not work, I would suggest calling the dealer and see if they can explain it!
After reading those two pages, it seems pretty straightforward. If you want to change the lock settings, you use the P, if you want to change the unlock settings, you use the N position
