I’m considering getting an iPhone 4G (or HD, or whatever it’ll be called) when it’s released (next week?), and have a few questions for those with the iPhone 3GS. I have a Prius V with nav (took delivery a year ago this week, so no USB, just aux input). If I pair for BT phone & BT music streaming: --when listening to a track, what info (track, artist, etc.), if any, will appear on nav screen? --if a call is received & answered while listening to music, will it pause the music, allow me to answer call, and after I hang up, continue the track? --can I control anything (other than volume) using the car’s controls (for example, skip to next track)? --after initial pairing, will it connect automatically when I turn the car on? Overall, what is your level of satisfaction with the BT streaming (sound quality, ease of use, etc.)? Any other specific comments/likes/dislikes also appreciated. TIA

START, STOP, VOLUME, SKIP --after initial pairing, will it connect automatically when I turn the car on? YES Overall, what is your level of satisfaction with the BT streaming (sound quality, ease of use, etc.)? Any other specific comments/likes/dislikes also appreciated. I'm very picky about sound quality - didn't really expect much from the streaming functionality. In fact I am very impressed. Even have my iPhone Sling media sound going through my car sound system. It works great!
I have to disagree, unless I'm doing something wrong. When I BT stream my iPhone 3G to the car, I get no artist or track info, no track control via the car, only the phone itself. When a call comes it, it does pause. The sound quality is fine, better than the AUX port. But, the volume is lower (I've tried to increase the volume via the iPhone) than the SAT. If I'm doing something wrong, let me know, as I'd love to have some control via the steering wheel when streaming from the iPhone.
The iPhone does not support the latest version of the AVRCP profile, which includes track, artist, and next/previous track control. Once Apple includes this, you will be able to change the track from your steering wheel. Keep in mind that as of the latest 4.0 beta, this is NOT included, so we might have a long wait until Apple adds this.
noah82 is correct. As of now (iPhone 3.1.3) with BT Audio Streaming: 1. No info on nav screen (none, zip, zero). 2. Since the call is actually being handled by the phone it functions the same as if you were listening to your music outside of the car on your headphones. 3. Only volume works from steering wheel. 4. It connects and starts playing as soon as the BT connection is established as long as the input on the Nav is left on BT. I am hoping iOS4 will change this and implement AVRCP 1.3+ but from what I'm reading it doesn't look like it.
Another question on contacts. I have ~500 contacts in Outlook, that I'll sync with the iPhone. Will they all upload to the car, and will it happen automatically every time I start the car (as I add/delete contacts)?
You can upload your contacts manually but not automatically. It's a quick and easy upload when you want to update the contacts.
When I was test driving, I uploaded several hundred contacts to the car and then found it EXTREMELY cumbersome to use the car's interface to find one. When I was pairing with my new Prius this afternoon, I noticed that you can restrict the contacts that the iPhone syncs by selecting one or more groups, as well as a couple of other criteria. I'm going to restructure my contact groups so that far fewer contacts end up in the car. I also noticed that the Prius will only hold 1,000 contacts...
I use speed dial to access my most often dialed because it can be use while the car is moving. Otherwise I use the steering wheel "dial by name" command.
Pairing my contacts from my Palm Pre to my car was simple. Once I authorized it on the phone it took about 30 seconds to transfer all of them. Now when I hit the talk button on the steering wheel, I can say, "dial by name", then the name, then dial, and the car will control the phone for me. Very nice indeed...
I thought that to dial by name you have to first assign a voice tag to the contact, and there' a limit of 20 voice tags. From the nav manual: DIALING BY NAME You can call by giving a voice tag registered in the phonebook. Is this not the case?
Let's say you have a bunch of Bobs in your address book, and you want to call Bob Smith on his cell phone (and you have his cell, home and office numbers). How do you do that? Would it be different if you only had 1 Bob?
I would say: me: Dial by name car: Dial by name me: Bob Smith car: Bob Smith me: Mobile car: Mobile me: Dial car: Dial and then it will dial. Sometimes if it doesn't parse correctly it will give you a list of approximate matches to the name and you have to pick them from a list by saying 1, 2, 3, etc, but usually it works perfectly for me. There are about 100 contacts in my iphone address book that were transferred. I've never assigned a "voice tag" to any of them.
That's very odd. I can control the track (up/down) with the steering wheel buttons when my netbook is BT streaming audio using Windows Media Player. No track/artist info though. Are you sure the iPhone can't skip tracks with the steering wheel buttons? I would assume it's more advanced than a simple netbook with basic BT. stream, Prius42's got it right. You can dial anybody in your contact list via name. You also choose which of Bob's number you wanna call (just replace where Prius42 has mobile with home or office if you want to dial Bob's alternative numbers) Just out of curiosity. Those with the 3GS have voice-activation, right? Can you do that while the phone is paired? Presumably you have to press the button on the iPhone to tell it a command, rather than a button in the car.
I can skip songs with the steering wheel switches on my iPhone 3G. Dialling everybody by name is not available via voice commands on european versions!
I have had my 2007 Prius for 2 weeks now. I'm trying to figure out how to sync my iphone to Bluetooth in the car. I don't know about the grouping thing on my phone. Can anyone help me? Thanks!
Very sure. Only volume controls from the steering wheel. Are you sure you are talking about BT STREAMING AUDIO? It is well documented that the current version of the iPhone OS (3.1.3) does not support NEXT/BACK or track info ( iOS version history - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia under the heading Bluetooth). Unfortunately it doesn't look like it will be implemented in the release of iOS4 either as the current build (the GM candidate) doesn't support it.
friend with a toyota nav (non-prius) uses iphone 3gs voice dial then uses bluetooth to use the phone. He prefers the voice dialing from the phone. My iphone 3gs can do pause and next song on my parrot bluetooth. Volume works as its simply the head unit not the device. I'm sure the toyota nav bt streaming is similar. Other bluetooth device likely have the other better support.
