There are a lot of self-tapping fasteners on a car. You should be ok. Use steel mesh, the plastic stuff is easier to chew through

After looking at the package on the kitchen counter from Aircabinman thru EBay for at least one week, I finally decided to try for the first time to change both filters.
With the instructions in the owners manual on about page 300, it was SOOO simple to do the A/C filter.
Then came the engine air filter & up went the hood & I was looking for the right place to open. With the new filter in hand it became obvious where it should go. I popped the fastemers, lifted out the old filter & put in the new, replaced the lid & was done in under 15 minuted for both.
With 21,000 miles on our 2006 both filters were dirty enough to change & for about $20 delivered, why not.
This job is truly a not much brainer !

the FRAM freshbreeze cabin filter (available at walmart $17) seems to be a "more significant" filter...hopefully it helps stop the filthy diesel carcinogen fumes from getting in my car!

So which one will work for an 06 Prius?

 

What is the right part number for the Bosch filter? Bosch's website and several auto parts websites say P3701, but other people in the forum are having success with P3785.

Any further opinions about which is better, OEM, Fram, or Bosch?

Now I am an accountant and I know little about car maintenance - but paying $49 to Toyota bugged me for the cabin filter change. Thanks to all of this forum - I just came back from CT - got my $22 ($19+Tax) filter and followed the instructions and 5 minutes later it is done. Boy I am proud of this small feat. And I have 2 Priuses - but the other one was clean.

I just followed those instructions - yes you push inward - you can do one side at a time (I think it is easier) - I had a reassembly problem - a small hick - if the air amortizer arm is off - it needs to be put back in at the 2nd hole - putting in back into the first hole doesn't work. I saved $28 and it actually takes less than 5 minutes once you've done it once.

In that case you may wish to purchase your filters in bulk to save even more money. For example the cabin air filter costs US$15 and the engine air filter costs US$13 (plus shipping) here:

If you DIY engine oil changes, you can buy a box of 10 oil filters for US$33 plus shipping. That box will last < 2 years if you change your oil at 5K mile intervals and drive each car 15K miles per year.

I don't know if this Texas dealer will ship to Canada.

changing you cabin air filter can make a big diffence in the indoor air quality of your vehicle. Last time I went to the dealer to get my $15 oil change they asked me If I wanted my cabin air filter changed. I said 'How much?' he told me $120 plus labor. I said I'll think about it. The filters are only $20 bucks and go behind the golve box . easy DIY. saved me close to $200 bucks. They do make a big diffence though, I noticed the diffence right away. when looking for the filters I found a funny article about them.

I'm such a cheap bastard I fashion my own air filters out of high quality furnace air filters.

But I also use my air compressor to blow out my cabin filter and engine air filter

Dealerships love to make money and if they can't screw you on the sale, they will absolutely screw you in the service department

Here's mine. I checked it back in November when I bought the car and it looked pretty good. Here it is today. I wonder if I have a mouse?
New one cost $20 at Walmart.

Made it back to post #144 didn't see one mention of taking the cabin filter out and washing it in the sink and putting it back in, three or four times a year and all's well that ends well.
A K&N engine air filter is also washable...

why does the owners manual here in greece just say to use compresed air on the filter ? it doesent say anything about replacing it! is there 2 types of filters on the prius?:behindsofa:
