Well, got new new 17" wheels for my Prius IV as I hated the little 15" wheels. The car handles much better now and the ride is still pretty quite and good. I think I am taking about a 5mpg hit with them at least but it's worth it I think. Hard to tell as it has been windy/wet here lately. Pics are in the gallery as can't post links to images yet (under 5 total posts).
Niceeee!!! I'm debating which size rim to go with for my Prius. Either 17 or 18, not sure yet. I'm new to this Pruis thing, I just sold my '05 Infiniti G35 for a Prius lol
sorry to go off topic a little but does anyone know how much the size of the wheel will affect mpg and turning very nice wheels btw
Common answer seems to be that you should expect to take a 3-5 mpg hit, but size is only a part of it, besides rotational mass, it depends on the weight of the wheel compared to stock. As for turning, it's generally improved in terms of handling, and not much difference in turning radius, but again it depends on how wide you go..
i'm a noobie and im probably leaning towards 16 inch possibly 17 does anyone have size specs to recommend for both?
Be careful of the idea of 16" wheels on your Prius - I called a big tire shop yesterday, and the only hybrid type, low rolling resistance tires available are the ones for the 2nd Gen touring Prius. That diamter might be a bit small for the Gen3. Just so you know.
try increase in friction from the grippier tires. A few pounds of weight doesn't do jack $hit on a street car, you might as well lose your love handles
Rotational weight of tires and rims is different than static weight of yourself or a passenger. The weight of the larger rims and tires will affect the force it takes to turn them, along with the added increase in friction. Just my two cents in trying to decide to add new rims to my as yet "unpurchased" Prius...I don't see the weights of the aftermarket rims and I'm not sure exactly how much of difference a pound or two will make...many have discussed this on cycling forums. By the way I'm new here and hoping to get my Prius this summer-my wife is in Kuwait and I really don't need TWO cars until she gets back but I really love that new Prius.
Sorry bro, but you are sooooo wrong. Effects of Upsized Wheels and Tires Tested - Tech Dept. - Auto Reviews - Car and Driver Way more info here: Effects of Wheel Size/Weight on Performance - RX8Club.com Please don't put dubs on your Prius.
What did you do about your tire sensors? Did you have to register them again with the dealership? Did they transfer over, or did you buy new ones? Looking to get new wheels too!
When was the last time you went all out accelerating and corners at full speed, I rest my case. Most people don't drive their card hard enough to notice such small change
I just sold my 06 Infiniti M45 for a prius. The stock 15" wheels look way too small for the wheel wells. As soon as I burn thru the stock tires, I will be upgrading to some lightweight 17" wheels and tires.
