If you just press the volume nob to turn the power off, it essentially works like a pause. It just takes longer than 0 seconds to resume when you're ready to unpause (especially if you're listening to an MP3 CD rather than a normal one). But at least the functionality is more or less there. Though I do agree, lack of a pause button seems pretty stupid.
