Our 2005 Prius was vandalized last night. The A pillar was dented and scratched down to the bare metal and the drivers side mirror was broken off. Looks like they threw a big heavy rock at the car. The mirror is broken at the hinge plate but the sail panel and mirror appear OK (the painted part of the mirror will need to be re-painted). Anybody have an exploded diagram of the mirror with the parts (if they are available separately)? Thanks
As far as I can tell, at least as OEM parts, the various bits making up the mirror are available as an "assembly," vice individual parts. These folks are a Prius exclusive salvage yard/rebuilder. They may be able to provide the parts/assembly you need at a sub-OEM price. Hope this helps.
If someone had done something like that, there should be a big, heavy rock at the scene. I doubt they'd stop and pick up the rock after throwing it at your car. Sounds more like a hit and run to me.
Well, it was in a parking lot (end space), so no hit and run. Also the damage was from something that came from above, hence the rock theory. It's my daugter's car - I wasn't there and she was too upset to look for a rock. I'm going to get the mirror and painted cover from Toyota and install it myself, thanks to instructions from Rokeby's link. Gonna need to have a body shop repair the dent in the a pillar, though.
Dumb question, but did you contact the police? If it was vandalism, then you may be able to get your insurance company involved. If you have a low deductable it might be worth it to have your insurance company pay to replace the mirror rather than try to rebuild it yourself. Vandalism sucks, I'm sorry you have to go through this.
Well, I got the A pillar repaired at a local body shop. Got 2 estimates for around $1000 each. Instead of what they proposed, I said just paint the A pillar at the front where it was repaired and clearcoat it half way back. That dropped it down to $700. And then I bought the mirror and painted cover for $200 and installed it myself. So I ended up paying $600 in total ($400 for the bodywork and $200 for the mirror). I also got my insurance agent to change the deductible on my comprehensive coverage to zero - cost an additional $200/year on 5 cars, which I don't think is bad at all (I've replace 2 windshields and this vandalism repair already this year on my dime)!
Why can't it be legal to have poisonous gas released if someone attempts to break into our cars? I bet it cuts down on the percentage of car break-ins
