Nokian WRx G2. A great all season (aggressive tread) but we paid no mileage penalty. We avearge ~52-53mpg with the occasional tank ~56. This is ~25,000 miles on these tires, two transcontinental trips, including the winter. Not cheap, but worth every penny. I got a set on A Subaru and it is unstoppable! Icarus
I'll second that! Fantastic tires. There is now a Nokian all season ultra low RR called the eNTYRE which comes in the 2004+ Prii sizes. Non toxic tread as a bonus. I can't get it for my gen 1 size rims though.*sigh*
I've been running Nokian WR G2's on my 2008. They handle well and mpg's are okay but I got less than 30,000 miles on them before I hit the wear bars. I'm planning to switch to summer and winter tires this year because the WR's don't handle well enough in the snow (particularly getting up my driveway). Looking at the Nokian eNTYRE. Anybody tried these?
what are the treadwear ratings on these tires? what tire pressures r u guys running? i have a new set of michelin weatherwise 2, UTOG 740, running 35 psi F, 33 psi R, getting 43-48 mpg on my 2002 prius. I think the higher UTOG would give u better shot at better mpg, im curious at running a higher pressure as well, but dont want to prematurely wear the center tread. food for thought. happy hypermiling
I'm also running the WR g2s and they are wearing fast on the fronts but mostly because I like to corner fast. The rears have hardly worn at all. That said they are called an all season but are formulated for winter and cold climates so they will wear faster in the US than in Canada or Finland. They should be treated as winter tires in my opinion. I'm going to get a set of summer H or all season eNTYREs as soon as I can and keep my WR g2s for winter. I just have to get a set of 15" 4X100 for my G1 b/c they don't make them in 14" I gound this post on Yahoo Prius-2G. I asked for an update so I will post that when it comes in.
You should not have centre wear problems on a good quality radial tire at max sidewall. In fact they should last longer, if anything. I am running at 49/51 with my WR g2s and they are wearing evenly. I have always run at at least max sidewall and have never had my tires wear out in the centre. Keep your front rear pressure bias though if you do go higher. You will find the handling improves.
Saw some good prices recently for two LRR/high MPG tires: Michelin Energy Saver A/S, size 195/60/R15: $115/tire plus $70 rebate on set of four at Tire Rack. Last time I looked at those, they were $125/tire. Nokian eNTYRE, size 185/65/R15: $89.99/tire at Plaza Tire Service (St Louis, MO). Installation extra of course. I am tempted on the Nokians, even though I only have 9K miles on my OEM Integrities. Driving in the rain on the latter is scary! I'm a little worried about the Nokians, though, because they are so new that there are no reviews for them.
It is may 2010 and I have found a great tire!! Brand new 2 weeks ago, they are Kumho eco solus HM KR22. Get this...100,000 mi. wear and low rolling resistance. Bought 4 new tires and the price with instal was $304.65. I got rid of those awful tires put on the car when it was new and could not be happier! You will need to check the companys web site for info. on snow.
my hydro edge were very noisy (2 yrs ago new) and when one half gone were very very poor traction in water,, constantly rotated them,, i hope mich has improved them now. pulled them off and gave them away
so compared to the G3 OEM Yokohoma's S33D, how is the noise levels on the Michelin Energy Saver A/S? I see that MPG might be the same or maybe up to +4 MPG. I remember on my old '05, when I went from the GY Integrities to Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S I took a dive from 48mpg to 44.5mpg, even when I ramped up the pressure to 40/38... so i suppose it's true, high performance = sticky = more rolling resistance. Oh and the Pilot Exalto A/S sidewall was stiff as a rock based on the stock OEM size, made the car "jarry". Never thought about LRR's until yesterday...I'm hoping that the Yoka's will only last me 20k miles so that I could have a legit excuse to change to something better, though in my preliminary research i'm also leaning towards the Michelin Energy A/S (thru Costco), Goodyear Assurance FuelMax (UTQG 540-580? Nice) or maybe the Bridgestone Ecopias EP20 or EP422. Since all of them are somewhat on the same price range (within $50 for a set of 4), I'm thinking Michelin due to previous experience and build quality. The only downside that I see going from the Yokahoma's S33D to the Michelins is the tire weight...goes from 19lbs/tire to 21lbs/tire.
Just installed the Nokian Entyre's on a 2005...these tires are truly ultra low rolling resistance tested. You can't change the laws of physics... But while the other tire companies claim LRR tires, Nokian proves it. Our Entyre MPG test in progress starting today. http://picasaweb.google.com/106049439247756239961/Prius#5494501830483344770 http://picasaweb.google.com/106049439247756239961/Prius#5494501994100581458 better than the old tires so far. we also used hyper-miling techinque which may have skewed the results somewhat.
I just bought a set of Bridgestone Ecopia's (stock 185/65R15) from Tirerack and ordered a set of Motegi SP10 15x7 in hyperblack (actually more of a painted silver) (about the lightest wheel and comparable to stock, for a reasonable price). I haven't installed them yet, but they got the 2nd highest fuel economy rating in a tirerack track test but were a LOT cheaper than the #1 tire and only slightly less of a hit on reported fuel savings compared to #1. Five tires were tested and compared to the worthless stock tires. I almost went for a set of Kumho's (not tested) solely based on price, but a buddy of mine with the same year/package Prius is going to try the Kumho's instead.
I really like my Nokian i3's. The db Super E-Spec tires are pretty awesome too but they don't look as good as the Nokians. I'm really curious how the new Nokians will stack up.
