Hi there all: Thought I'd pop in and say hello. We bought a 2010 black Prius III yesterday on a bit of a whim to replace my 2000 Jeep Cherokee that had almost 145,000 miles racked up. So far, over about 70 miles, I'm averaging about 29 MPG which is great compared to my Jeep which got about 12 MPG. I've tried the EV and ECO modes, but they are both way to slow for me. That's ok though, I've more than doubled my gas mileage, so I'm not too worried about it. Overall I'm pretty happy with the car. It's just my commuter, but its comfortable and pretty fun to drive if you really stomp on the pedal. In any case, thanks for having a great forum here. I'll read up on some fun things to do to the car. So far I'm only planning on adding a proper horn to it, probably a Stebel which I use with my motorcycles. All the best.
Welcome and congratulations on your new purchase. I understand about the Jeep mileage. I traded a Jeep Grand Cherokee with 197,000 miles for my III. If you think the acceleration is sluggish try the PWR mode. The only difference in any of the modes is that the accelerator mapping is changed in the first half of travel. It takes a lot of pedal movement in ECO but very little in PWR for the same acceleration. The car is right "peppy" in PWR mode. There does not seem to be a lot of difference in mpg in the different modes. Are your trips so far short trips with a lot of start/stops? 29 mpg is not very good on this car. Most are averaging over 50 mpg. Try a longer trip and see if your mpg does not improve.
Hi JD: Thanks for the tips. Definitely lots of short trips and tons of stop and go driving in the first 70 miles on the car. Not really enough mileage to get a fair estimate yet. I'll try the power mode and see if that helps it be more responsive. It's fine once I'm moving, its just that coming from a complete stop, the car seems to hesitate unless I cram on the pedal. With that said, I'm quite happy to be getting even 29mpg given how bad my mileage was on my Jeep.
:welcome:, It is great to see someone on here that has so low expectations for their Prius. You only one way to go; UP.
Indeed.. 29mpg? You're gonna be ecstatic the first time you stretch the legs and get 4x the Jeep's mileage.
:welcome: WOW!! 29!! I didn't think the Prius could get that low gas mileage. Even up here in the winter ours only drops to 39 on short trips. I think you will be pleasantly surprised when you figure out how the hybrid system works. Enjoy!!
