I attempted to order a Tanabe exhaust this week based off of this:

After speaking with several Tanabe retailers, it looks like the concept g and touring medallion exhausts for Gen II prius's won't reach the US for another 90 days. Just a heads up for everyone.

I think i've officially run out of mods to purchase.

What's the supposed benefit of this exhaust?

Weight savings, top end acceleration improvement, sound (subjective)

You mean it is even quieter?

I bet the only detectable 'improvement' is that your neighbors hate you now.

I still can't figure out why they didn't tuck the muffler up into the stock location instead of having it hang down so far.

Looks like something you'd have your local muffler shop hack together for $100 that you frequently see on old beat up imports driving around making lots of noise but not going very fast.

First time around I thought that was photoshopped but have seen other pictures and it's not. The exhaust is just hanging out the underside of the car - are there plans to tuck it on production versions?

My guess is that if they tucked any further it runs the risk of melting the bumper plastics. That, or where they have it at gives the least amount of bends in the pipe.

The heat shield is useless now. Cat will get colder faster and that will result in running ICE more often. It will come down to lower MPG.

Also, when you hang something like that on your car you want people to see it.

Not only that, but I think the design was done to make it as cheap as possible. It's a lot harder to properly design a system for the Prius which tucks the canister up out of the way while still looking "nice" for those people who want to see the exhaust tip. Personally, I prefer the hidden/stealth look!

Huh? The cat is a LONG ways upstream from the muffler. There will be negligible difference in ICE run times and MPG as result of this muffler.

I'm assuming that you mean "louder sound", most likely.

Some things to keep in mind about this:

    - The Prius sometimes spins the ICE very fast, when horsepower or torque demand is high, especially when the Traction battery is low on charge. So you can find yourself not going very fast, but making noise that would be appropriate for a higher rate of acceleration. Rather than having the desired "coolness" factor, it will make bystanders think "hey, look at that sad little car making all that noise and going so slow". Sort of like most of the "rice rockets" that I see on the road, that I can beat from a dead stop with my Sienna minivan!

    - As you already know, the ICE is often off when the car is not moving (depending on cabin temperature needs, etc). So in stop and go traffic, if the exhaust is loud, it will be pretty weird having the car go from being almost dead quiet to loud (at a fixed RPM) and then quiet again, without ever moving.

    - Ultimate acceleration is not just related to ICE output. Whether or not you will see a performance increase with a less restricted exhaust system is questionable. A couple of guys have tried supercharging their Priuses, but have met with very limited performance improvements. So a mere exhaust change most likely will not gain much performance increase, if anything.

It appears to be hanging pretty low and I wonder if this might cause some problems.

Can anybody give me some idea of the cost of this system?
    Thanks
