    Hey Everyone,

After three years of awesomeness with my Gen II, I traded up last week for the Gen III package IV with the Solar Package.

I'd barely driven it 150 miles when I started up, got the master warning light (the yellow triangle with the ! inside it) and "Check Hybrid System" on the display. The car still drives perfectly. I'm able to see (and hear, and feel) that the hybrid system seems to be working perfectly. I called the dealer and the service guy had nothing to say except "bring it in".

Anyone else seen this happen? (I've restarted more than 3 times and still no change).

    Many thanks.

"bring it in" I can't imagine you being able to do anything else either, and can't imagine him being able to diagnose it over the phone.
Please let us know what the problem ends up being

So, after starting and restarting on Saturday, I didn't drive it on Sunday. When I started up this morning, everything was fine. The warning light and message were gone and the car still ran perfectly.

    Strange.

My '08 Highlander Hybrid had a power steering lockup and it displayed "Check Power Steering" and some other message on its small display. I powered off, then back on, and that cleared it up, I thought. At the next regular maintenance I mentioned it to the service writer, and they ended up replacing the electronic power steering link and computer module.

If I were you I'd still take it in sooner rather than later.

Thanks Jay_Man. I'm bringing it in on Wednesday for the Perma Plate treatment anyway (light interior + kids = trouble). I'll be sure to mention it to them.

Any 'Check' message on the display is associated with a diagnostics code that can only be retrieved by hooking the car up to the diagnostic computer. A regular OBD-II scanner can normally only retrieve Check Engine codes - Toyota don't publish the addresses to retrieve codes for other computers, only the addresses for the engine ECU are standardized by SAE.

(It's disappointing that Toyota still see service and repair work as an opportunity for the dealers to screw the customer a second time, rather than make the diagnostic information actually accessible for the customer to do their own troubleshooting. An informed customer is usually better than an ignorant one, and a healthy independent repair ecosystem keeps the dealers honest.)

The monitor (software program in the ECU) that led to the code being recorded can be triggered if a problem occurs in two successive trips (two-trip detection logic) - some of these codes are cleared from their 'active' state after another few trips without the situation recurring, although the data is still kept for later checks. It's still worth getting them looked at even if the Check message disappears.

I would NEVER ignore a CEL, especially a brand new car with oodles of warranty. You gain nothing by ignoring a CEL, but do stand to have more problems

When I took my dash apart to add the USB adapter (no go btw, need NAV :() I turned the car on without connecting the switches on the console around the 'shifter' (P, EV, Eco, PWR) just to test the sound. I immediately got a message about the Park Lock having an error. So I reconnected the switches and tried again. The Check Hybrid System alert continued for about 24 hours or several starts, can't be sure what finally turned it off. But it is annoying, it takes up the whole MID side of the screen. You can switch to a different display, such as the HSI, but it will keep coming back to the alert after just a couple of seconds. Anyway, the day after I started getting the alert I decided to go to Pep Boys and get a code scanner/clearer for the DTCs. As I drove to the store the display was giving me the error. So I purchase the damn thing and get back into my car, guess what! No more error. I didn't even get the scanner out of the bag!

I brought the car back to the dealer this morning. The computer was still "throwing a code" apparently, even though the Master Warning Light went away. The engineer there said he'd never seen it before so they called the factory -- and they're keeping my car ("We don't think you should drive it until we find out more about it").

I'll update when I get more news...

Thanks for the update and keep us posted when you hear from the dealer as to the cause.
Much Appreciated from all of the group I am sure.

Yes, thanks for updating us. Hope it works out well, and looking forward to seeing the resolution.

    Update:

After keeping the car for a day and speaking to the factory, they determined that the code was reporting an issue with the Camshaft Sensor. After checking the system, everything tested OK and they released the car back to me. (They also paid for my car rental after only a little bit of pressure from me.)

As mentioned before, the car drove perfectly before the light came on, after it came on, after it went away, and after they checked it out. Needless to say, I'm paying careful attention to any sounds, lack of acceleration, or any other engine (camshaft) sluggishness. So far -- about 200 miles -- not a single problem to report.

Here's what they wrote on the service invoice:

CEL CODE PO340 CAMSHAFT SENSOR TESTED OK

Hope no one else has had to deal with this... but as problems on a very sophisticated car go, I guess this appears to be minor.

    Thanks everyone for the support.

Yes thanks for getting us the information, and let's hope it is only a false read for anything. It sometimes does happen, and as many have stated turning off and back on sometimes makes a possible warning reset. Keep us posted if this happens any more.

We are all learning the new GEN III and always appreciate sharing any sort of comments about Operation such as you did...Thanks!

Hmm, wonder if your cam sensor connector was loose. It's right
on top of the engine, the highlighted D18 here:

although the manuals now call it the "VVT sensor" as it's used
to determine intake cam timing feedback.

I have had this problem 3 times already. I bought the 2010 Prius in late June. The 1st time (August) the dealer checked it out and found nothing. The next time (mid- September) they replaced the solenoid and figured that would take care of it. Guess what was on this morning when I started the car? You are right. I really enjoy driving the car, but I'm starting to get really ANNOYED.

i had my car in to check the ipod interface. it obviously wasn't working. ...........thanks toyota.

the tech took the dash apart.

couldn't fix the ipod problem. we all know why.....thanks toyota

got in my car back to go to work and got the triangle with the warning.

it turned out to be that the tech didn't plug in the cable for the parking switch.

    it was easily fixed.

so the idea of loose wiring is most plausible.

Did the dealer reset the warning, or did it go off by it's own?

Got the same problem on my month old 2010 Prius III. took it to the dealer and computer gave P0340 Camshaft position Sensor Circuit malfunction error. The dealer cleared the code and it did not come again. Hope I do not have to deal with this issue again.
