Netbook or iPad in Prius

No, the iPad does not charge from any 12 volt source. It requires more juice. Even when I plug my iPad into the PC, it does not charge. Mine only does so when plugged directly into the wall outlet at home or work.

As for fitting it into my glove box, I have not tried, but I will try to report here when I do, unless someone else beats me to the punch. As for an 11" netbook, I suppose it would depend on the full dimensions (w and h and d), but without that information (or an 11" netbook) I cannot help you. If the iPad ends up fitting with lots of extra space, then you may be okay.

The other question is do you want to keep those in the glovebox? I would image that if these are left in there the high heat in the summer months could cause some significant damage to it.

 

I don't think the iPad would fit in the glovebox (especially if anything else is in there).
However, it does fit quite nicely in the center console if you take the little tray out (this is in a 2008 model).
You can power it with some computers as well, it is just that it requires at least a 5w usb connection which is not terribly common yet. And even at 5w, it would be a very slow charge.
If you have plug adapter for the power plug (cig lighter) using the power adapter that came with the iPad is your best bet.

 

Personally, I would get a different tablet PC which has a car charger available. Semi-rugged version. They are more expensive, but they also would tolerate the environment and abuse better than an iPad.

Dell model can have Linux instead of Windows 7. Not sure about the other brands.

For a laptop stand, I found the RAM-Mount for the Prius. According to the company, "The tray is connected to the swing arms via a swivel ball socket so you are able to rotate and position the tray any way you choose; except backwards."

Of course, drive first, compute later...

 

This is out of topic. PLEASE tell me about Ipad. To buy or not to Buy? I know it doesn't support flash so I decided not to buy it. But now I am doubting.
Is the Ipad good? Do you like it?

Lack of Flash has not impacted me in the least. Never been much of a fan, but have found that I really don't need it as I thought I did.

Personally, I like browsing while watching tv, or out in my hammock. I also liked the idea of using it for gaming (yes, I am REALLY that geeky).
It has worked beautifully for me.
It does have some limitations though, you really can't hook up much other than a wireless BT keyboard to it, so if you rely heavily on peripherals in your mobile computing, you may not want it.

As for the car deal, you could do something like what these guys did:

Companies will be releasing 12 volt charger that charge the ipad. I know Griffin has one out.

Love my iPad. Its a neat internet appliance for home use and probably the world's best portable media player. Movies on it are gorgeous! I think Kindle is a better reader but the iPad isn't bad. The apps people come up with are just amazing. I accidentally downloaded the Nike Football app thinking it was for football but it was for soccer. But am glad I did since it is amazing! Has training videos and team chart to keep up with training. All absolutely free.

This is my 10.1†display Netbook in the glove box.



My glove box is lined with felt. It keeps stuff from moving around.

I do not keep my netbook in the glove box. It sits on the floor behind the driver seat. I have a car adapter to charge the netbook. When the netbook is in the car it is always getting charged. The cord is long enough that I use it in the front seat.



When the netbook is in the house I dock it to a 1920x1080 display.



You can see the netbook in the left part of the pictures. It drives the monitor on the left. The other 2.5 displays are driven by my desktop. I use an app to share one keyboard and mouse across both units.

I do not see any value in an iPad. The iPad gives you the functionally of a smartphone in a netbook form factor. A netbook gives you the functionally of a Desktop in the same form factor. Apple should have released OS X on a device that size. That would make more senses to me.

Using an iPad for a carputer does not make any sense. There are so many great apps for the windows platform that are perfect for carputers.

You can choose from many GPS apps, OBDC II apps that show MPG, RPM, Tire Pressure, speed, tach, the list is unlimted. With a carputer you can run the Toyota TechStream software and control all the settings in the car.

You can also install many audio and video options. The iPAD is a closed platform. Why would anyone waste them time putting one in a car. You will never see an OBDC II interface on the iPad.

 

Yes, it fits in the bottom glove box, with a lot of room to spare, but doesn't fit in the top glove box (too shallow). Yes, 2010 Gen III Prius.

 

Scosche has developed a double-din solution called the iKit for installing the new iPad where your stereo used to go. It's not the most elegant setup because it's intended to keep your iPad portable, with a rotating dock at the end of a ball-joint mounted in the dash. But if you just gotta jack your iPad into your car and still have it handy when the ride's over, the iKit could be for you

 

I got the Viliv x70 with the proclip mounts. The proclip mounts attached to the "lines" in the dashboard.

 

I'm pretty sure I saw a car charger for the iPad at the Apple Store.
And I really like my iPad. I think the iBooks app is a great reader, although it does not have an enormous library available - yet! I got the free Kindle app for iPad and downloaded a book to test it. The Kindle for iPad does not work as well as the iBooks IMHO - not as intuitive. I have never seen a Kindle, so I don't know if this is a "stripped down" version of the reader.
And don't even think about leaving your iPad in your car. Heat will damage it & probably shorten battery life.
