I was surprised to see my "Maint Reqd" light come on the other day, then checked the records and sure enough I'm due for a change. I've been on Amsoil 0w-20 for just over 10K miles, with a spot check UOA at 5K that was golden. I have half a bottle of that left. I also have a LOT of Amsoil 0w-30 sitting aside for the Honda Odyssey. But that car doesn't get driven as much since getting the Prius. If I can use up this stockpile of Amsoil I'll probably switch to Mobile 1 synthetic for better price and availability. So I think I'll just tip in the half bottle of 0w-20 and finish the fill with the 0w-30 and call it good. Summer gets hot here anyway. Would anyone expect the mileage hit to be significant? Thanks! - D
With my '04 Prius, the second summer I had it, I had some Esso XD-3 15W-40 left over after servicing the equipment at my hobby farm. I didn't want to hang onto 3.5 litres of 15W-40 until next summer, so when the Prius needed an oil change I put it in There was zero impact on my fuel economy
Ah great, thanks for the input. With 2 x 4qt jugs + 2 and a half quart bottles of 0w-30 lying around I need to use it. Odyssey is due as well so I'll make a big dent in the stockpile this weekend. - D
Woops, misspoke in the OP. Did the two oil changes today and discovered that I had the weights reversed in the post. Had been running 0w-30 and have a stockpile of 0w-20 for the Odyssey. So now I have the half quart of 0w-30 + remainder fill of 0w-20 in the Prius. I'm sure I'll never notice a difference. - D
0W30 is a better oil for hot weather. Many years ago I had a VW deisel Rabbit and 30wt was required. I put in one quart of 10w40 and my mileage increased 5 MPG.
