    Update.

I took the car back to the dealer, and had the shop foreman go for a drive with me. Of course it didn't make any noise, so he said come back when it does. I explained to him that it would be inconvenient to have to come back at the exact moment it happened again (assuming their service shop was even open then), and asked him to have a tech inspect the TSB work they did on the rear brakes.

Got the car back the next day. What they found was the new shims on the rear pads were loose, so they "tightened the ends on the shims, and applied white disc brake grease on ends."

So far, no noise. Fingers crossed.

I had the blurry screen TSB, but only the TSB number for the brakes, and had no issues. By entering your VIN in their system, they can view all TSBs that apply to your car.

I'm sad to report that mine has started to do the same thing with the new shims...exactly as you described it…just about at the 5 MPH range.

It is good to hear that they were able to do something...I was at a point that I didn't wanted them touching it again. Grant it they have only worked on it twice. Thanks Stream!

I had considered not having the shims replaced, and not having the cloudy A/C display replaced, on the theory that some problem or damage might be created in the process.

The day I first picked up the car after the brake work, I was running some errands, and it was a nice day so I had the windows down, and in parking lots the brakes sounded like an old car, so I went right back to the dealer. They had the tech go for a drive with me, and it made the screeching noise as we were pulling out of their facility, but didn't for the rest of the drive, and the tech said he couldn't do anything since it was no longer making noise, and to come back when it made the noise again.

That's why when I went back the second time I went out with the shop foreman. In many (most?) dealers, techs are paid by the job (not hour) so they don't like to have to re-do anything, so I learned a long time ago that any issue like this requires dealing with somebody in management.

Glad (not really though) to see someone had similar issues as me after the shim replacement. Have an appointment next week to try and resolve this once and for all. Its hard to replicate by doing A, B, C, but like the squeak but it happens every time I drive the car, but I am going to be adamant about getting this fixed as this will be my 5th time being there for this problem. OHHHHHHHH so annoyed!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just one more addition to my rear brake squeak saga. Just like some before posters I got the TSB done for shim update, but after a few days a screaching sound from the brake was appearing at random braking times. I finally was able to bring it back in and am going to pick the car back up. Apparently there is another TSB for the rear brake boot? Something like that. Both sides replaced. I guess there is another TSB if the shim does not fix the issue or maybe they are together, not sure on that. He just mentioned there is another TSB on it. I don't know what the number is, but my tech just called and that is what he told me. Anyway, this noise better be gone. So sick of it. I hope no one else has this problem.

Please post the TSB number, and repair description (from the invoice) when you pick the car up.

Did it fix the issue? Could you post the TSB number and repair description from the invoice?

After driving through a mountainous area yesterday, I had some squeaks. Must be caused by brakes heating up, since it happened a few weeks ago when I drove the same route. This is getting old.

Mine started squeaking yesterday. first time it's rained since i got it, so assumed it was just some surface rust on the discs.

I think that's unrelated...sounds like it was the JFAS (Junk Food Alarm System). :D

So I think my squeak saga is over (crossing fingers). After almost a week in the cold\sun\rain\etc, I have not heard one single squeak after my latest fix.

From looking at my invoice, it doesn't appear to be a different TSB than the one where the shims were replaced. Although my advisor told me there was a different TSB. What was mentioned in the invoice was that they found TSB 0098-010 (same as shim) and replaced rear brake shoes. Same TSB as the shims, but different solution. I am wondering if they just do the bare minimum and if problems persist, do step two which is to replace the rear brake shoes. Or maybe they wrote the wrong number down? Anyway, hope this helps. It has been a long journey with squeaky brakes and numberous fixes and visits to the dealer. Remember the second solution if the first does not fix your problem. Good luck.

Keep in mind, performing diagnostics on a vehicle is a little like peeling an onion. You have to get the outer layers off before you can see what's at the center.

Additionally, Toyota (not the dealership, the company) is going to try the most conservative option first. If that doesn't fix it, they'll go to the next step. When you are trying to polish out scratches on your car's paint job, you don't start compounding. You begin with the least-aggressive polish first. Or, to put it another way, if you go to your doctor for a headache, he's going to try some other stuff before performing brain surgery.

Interesting. Brake shoes are a part of drum brakes, but the 2010 Prius has disc brakes front and rear.

I just re-read this thread...since mine is a Feb 2010 build, it shouldn't require this update according to the above information (as well as according to the TSB and the VINs affected). I have noticed more squeaking recently since my last post in this thread, but it's still likely too intermittent for the dealer to be bothered. Meh.

The cooler weather may very well be what has made it more noticeable of late.
