Hi I'm having a problem with my 1-day old baby (the prius, that is). Whenever I park on the road, the hill assist comes on. Seems to be triggered by the slight sideways slope most roads have (for drainage ?). As a result, the car will refuse to go to [Drive] gear. A message comes on in the screen saying "Please put in P gear" or something similar. First time this happened, it took me 1/2 hour to RTM and cancel the Hill Assist. The procedure was : 1. Step off the brake 2. Put in Park 3. Switch off 4. Engage parking gear 5. Wait couple of seconds 6. Switch on 7. Depress brake 8. Switch on car 9. Engage Drive gear 10. Disengage parking gear In any other car , this would be malfunction. Is there a problem with my car ? Maybe the sensors ? I bought it yesterday, so I can take is back (maybe) or atleast get it fixed. Thanks in advance for your responses. Regards Debjyoti
Sounds to me like the brake pedal is being pressed way too hard. Try barely touching it, just enough to indicate to the system that it is engaged. Allow the parking brake to hold the vehicle in place while shifting to Drive. .
Yes, I agree it could be that you're pushing the brake petal too hard. Pushing it in all the way triggers the assist. I did that a few times by accident too when I first got it.
Sound nothing like hill start assist to me, as others have said that is triggered by brake pedal pressure and it won't stop you putting the vehicle in motion. Are the doors and rear hatch closed properly? This sounds like the doors are not closed all the way, the hatch can be tricky to close but never push the spoiler, push the Toyota emblem, it is strong and dependable!! This message > Please put in P gear < indicates a door is open but the vehicle is in drive, reverse or neutral.
Thx for the responses. It is the hill assist for sure becoz the light comes on. None of the other lights are on. I encountered it twice again today. It's either due parking on a slope or I'm braking too hard. Gentle pressure on brake pedal didn't help though. The full sequence from the manual works every time. Maybe the sensor is too sensitive in my car. Rgds
