After reading a thread on short duration driving in the city with our Prius, I found it alarming that not 1 post said they got 51 city, whether it was short duration or it was overall city duration.

Before you all say that the 51 City mpg rating, was done in an indoor facility and the car was already warmed up or the EPA rated it.. yada, yada, yada !..So its unfair to ask on one way or the other !

On the contrary , what are people really getting ?

People should just post , what they notice they get in their city overall city driving MPG(Short duration, long duration, the total avg. ),since this is strictly a city mpg question, please do not give your overall MPG and do not give your city MPG using enhancements made to your car(Such as Block heaters).

I find the city MPG in my case being a Myth since I get about 30 mpg, then again I find that my highway MPG at 48 is a Myth too, since I get better then 48.

I got 57 driving around my town the other day. Technically, it is not a city, but the road I was driving on has multiple lights and plenty of stop and go action. I went into 4 different stores. There was no warm up period for the car that is not figured into this total. I got into my car, set the Trip B to 0 and went out and did my errands.

We get between 53 and 58 MPG indicated, in a combination of city and freeway driving. The mileage in the city is as good as the freeway, as long as the drive is more than a few miles.

I get about 60-75 mpg in city only, my combined city/highway 50/50% is about 55mpg.
I don't suspect that there is much difference between your streets or mine.

I get in the 30s for short city trips. Around 40 for longer trips. I got awful city mileage in my previous car, lexus gs 400 also though.

i get 60 -70 in pure city driving. duration is important as it takes a few miles (depending on outside temp) for the engine to warm up, during which time it gets very poor mileage. you should spend some time here learning about your car to determine if it's your trip distances, driving style or a problem with your car causing the poor city mileage. your hywy mpg seem fine.:)

I get between 25-65 mpg in a combo of city and freeway:D...I asked that we conclude city mpg strictly on city !

Meaning, if you left home, drove on the freeway for 30 miles and drove in the city for 5 , parked your car for work. Then got in your car drove 5 miles to the freeway and got home...What did you get in the city for the 10 miles of driving ?...You can combine that mileage to your overall city mileage if you are still in the city by going to the gym, going grocery shopping , visiting family ..etc etc.

I understand in many places, the word "city" may mean 4 lights in the whole city,so the answer may be a little grey and not black and white.I also understand that people don't just assess just the city in their trip meters(That's what I'm asking for, to put your trip to 0 before or after highway driving)I am trying to see on how many Prius drivers live in urban city areas compared to Prius drivers in rural city areas to draw an average overall conclusion on city MPG. Myth or Fact!

    Thanks !

So you drive in the city for 45 minutes ? Is the city 30-45 miles wide ? If you are getting poor mileage in the first ten minutes, you must be getting 100 MPG to get 60-70 mpg for the other 35 minutes, unless you are cab driver or delivery guy and drive for hours in the city. Take out a pen and calculate it . Freeway driving is not city driving in my book, sitting in traffic on the freeway and going EV on bumper to bumper is also Highway MPG to me ! The average is assessed the moment you start your drive in the city, not giving it a warming period.

Where I come from, if I really need to go somewhere, I hop on the freeway to get there quick and if I need to go somewhere close in the city, which means small durations, chances are , I'll get there in 10 minutes.

No need to assume that people live in urban areas are clueless.

i don't do it everyday. it's not my commute, but i have occasion to drive into downdown boston from the suburbs. 25-35 mph, 20-30 miles round trip, generally an hour depending on traffic. many lights and relatively flat. that is a 60-70 mpg route in my gen II and III should be as good or better.

every prius gets poor mileage unil warm up is complete so if you can measure mpg after x miles on a trip until stopped, it would be an interesting and higher number. i can't do it on gen II.

    wasn't assuming anything. peace brother.:)

Boston is a pretty big town

must be nice. where i come from, there is only one freeway. that is I-5 and trust me, you only get on I-5 when you have no choice, which we dont if going parts east to north (have to swing around the end of Puget Sound to go North)

i purposefully parked my Zenn and drove my Prius to work. its 7 miles one way, speeds 25-40 mph. no traffic in the morning, VERY heavy traffic coming home. in my short commute, i was averaging 54-58 mpg in the summer, 47-50 mpg in the winter.

so ya, with the right conditions, driving style and an appropriate sacrifice to the traffic light gods; one most definitely can get 50+ mpg.

No offence, but I don't see or remember anything in NJ that is faintly similar as to driving in 4 of our 5 boroughs(I'll give you Staten Island:D). NJ , to me is rural driving where I get 45+ mpg, where lights are 5-10 times farther apart(With a ton of strip malls) then in our city environment. The speed limit on your 2 lane roads are the same as our highways. Those 2 lane roads are considered city driving for you guys and have local highway signage, we just deal with streets and avenues here, to get to a highway !

    Thanks for your post !

My last tank was 587 miles on 9.03 gallons. Calculates to 65.01 MPG and it was 100% Phoenix city driving to and from work. OK, it did include taking my son to the orthodontist and a trip to Home Depot, but I avoid the freeway. I will take the access road. Accelerate to 40, then glide 3/4 of a mile to the next light and repeat. The wife uses 6 miles of freeway 5 days a week from work, and her mileage (Blue in my signature) is lower, but we both set the CC at 56 in the right lane when we are on the freeway.

51 MPG, I hope I never see numbers that low.

if you're talking madison square garden to brooklyn on friday afternoon, that's not city driving, that's the southeast expressway here in boston. stop and go, creep and crawl, that will kill your battery and your mileage!

    Thanks for your post !

Been in your city quite a few times..I assure you will not get your mileage strictly driving downtown, most your mpg mileage is on the adjacent highway to get into(exiting off) to your city..Let me know what you get after the game at Fenway, sitting in slow traffic(With lights) to get onto the highway ! Go Yanks !!!

On windy mountain roads driving with a semi-lead foot (as a delivery driver for 5hours a night) with temps still in freezing to low 40's F, I am getting mid to high fourties in mpg. There is no hypermilling here. Once it warms up eventually, hopefully I will get higher. But what other car gives you this kind of mileage and is available in the states?! If the iQ was here, or the deisel smart, then maybe, but as soon as it gets to the US they will add some rediculous engine and increase the weight by a few hundred pounds just for the hell of it.

Maybe they will bring the hybrid Auris over? 74.3 imperial mpg, which is 61.9 US mpg and it looks better than the Prius too...
