Hi all. I have my prius for a month now and have alrEady 1200 miles on it but m only averaging in the high 47.xx miles with an average mph of 21. Am I doing something different why I'm not in the 50's? Is my altitude/ location play a part of he mpg? Does starting the car in the morning and driving immediately also affect the mpg?
Hello and welcome aboard! Give it a little time and it should come up a bit as you and the car will break-in. Describe your usual commute/drive in terms of distance, elevations, traffic, speed, etc.
1. Starting the car and driving immediately is a good thing for me. Just don't floor it thy to keep the bar from going into the red area untill the car warms up. If you didn't know the car uses battery power for the first 3-5 mins even when the ICE is running. 2. 47mpg is better than alot of people, The true range drivers are getting is between 42-55 mpg so your almost right there in the middle. 3. I seem to get better mpg cause i have long trips that are mostly at highway speeds 55-65mph. I don't do as well in the city. Relax and enjoy your new ride...
Kimoy, we are "smog free city" (if you believe it) so our gas has higher ethanol % (10%) and other additives that make for cleaner emissions but at the same time we get slightly less miles per gallon due to that. I have a friend that goes to Ohio once in a while and he brings me back 10 gallons of 2-5% ethanol and it adds a couple of miles per gallon.
Thanks for he feedback guys as well as the humor. Made me smile. Anyway I am now up to 48.5 mpg iam hoping to get at least 50. I drive 15 miles one way to work for 5 days a week and an additional 10 miles daily. I now have just under 1400 miles on my car. My average speed is 22mph on county roads which has an average speed of 45 to 50 mph and drive about 2 miles on 35 mph 20 percent of the time. I don't have a "lead foot" which means tha I always take it easy off the line all the time. I always drive on "Eco" mode and try to avoid driving on the "power" as much as I can. Hope I'll reach the 50 mark.
As you become more experienced driving your Prius and the weather gets warmer, you'll see the mileage get better. Good luck and enjoy!
I finally hit the 50mpg today after driving 2058.2 miles since I got the car. It's a nice feeling knowing that the car I used to drive only averaged 20mpg.
