    Hello Prius gurus!

I bought a new Prius in 2009, I did not pay taxes in CT. I think that I can not ask for a deduction for this reason. But can I ask for a deduction in federal taxes?
    Thanks.

    Hello,

The federal tax credit on the Prius expired in 2008, I believe. I don't think you can claim any form of a deduction on them unless you have a business write off.

The no-sales-tax benefit is separate as it relates to sales rather than income tax.

I am planning to buy a 2010 Prius and according to the DMV website and IRS website, the Sales tax exemption (6%) is only valid for Prius 2001-2008.

Are you sure about no sales tax in CT on New Prius 2010 ?

I just took delivery of my Prius from Hartford Toyota last week. I shopped extensively before buying there. I checked with Stephen Toyota, Wallinford Toyota and Middletown Toyota. Only one place was requiring me to pay sales tax. Ultimately, I paid no sales tax. Nevertheless, it is my understanding that the sales tax exemption on Prius's ended several years ago. I think most dealers and perhaps Connecticut DRS have missed this change. My advice: go for it.

According to the CT DRS site:

The Exemption for High MPG Passenger Motor Vehicles: Purchases and leases of passenger motor vehicles that meet the following conditions qualify for exemption under Conn. Gen. Stat. §12-412(110):
    The vehicle must be a passenger motor vehicle, as defined in Conn. Gen. Stat. § 14-1(63). A motorcycle is not a passenger motor vehicle and so purchases and leases of motorcycles do not qualify for this exemption. A passenger motor vehicle may, but need not be, a hybrid passenger car;
The vehicle must have a USEPA estimated city or highway mileage rating of at least 40 miles per gallon; and
The purchase or lease must occur on or after January 1, 2008, and on or before June 30, 2010. The exemption applies to lease payments for that portion of the lease term that is on or after January 1, 2008, and on or before June 30, 2010.
Purchases and leases of 2009 and 2010 model year passenger motor vehicles are exempt if the vehicle has a USEPA estimated city or highway mileage of at least 40 miles per gallon.

I made up my mind, I am buying a 2010 Black Prius, for 27,100$ with Nav and solar roof.

I will update this thread after I register the car next week, regarding the sales tax.

Sales tax in CT on hybrids or diesels that get over 40 mpg is waived. 100% sure of that.

    Hello 2286743:
Yep, I confirm that I did not pay sale tax on my Prius that I bought on October 2009.
If a dealer ask you for sale tax walk away.

Yeah, it originally expired in 2008 but it's been extended. I bought one in January 2010 and it had zero tax.

Hey 2286743, Nice choice in color. I'll warn you that they are very hard to keep clean. (You probably already know this.) When clean and shiney they are awsome!
