    Greetings,

This issue has plagued my GEN III from the purchase...finally as of April 8th, 2010 Toyota has officially release an updated shim kit. I mentioned this my service tech (who is wonderful) every time I've been in for an oil change...this time he looked to see if anything was posted about the issue since I'm getting close to that magical 36K mark and eureka he found this service bulletin which describes my issue to the 'T'.

The kit has been order and will be installed next Saturday so I'll update this post with my experience and the results.

Here are the details on the update:

    --

    Regards,

    Ed

My brakes were squeaking really bad prior to the brake recall/update. Now they don't squeak at all.
    But thanks for the information!

Was the squeaking coming from the front brakes at higher speeds or was is it when backing up or moving forward at low speeds with cold brakes?

I just had the AOB ECU update performed the same day I learned of the 'Technical Service Bulletin' on the rear brake squeak.

    Thanks for the feedback.

Only heard the squeaks going in reverse, slow with cold brakes. It was getting so loud I was fearing waking the kids up in the morning. But now it is gone.

Thank goodness. The wheel squeak is so bad on my car it's embarrassing. It not only happens on a cold start in the morning, but after I park my car for 5 minutes. Thanks for posting this.

Tell me about it. I hope everything holds water until about 200k when it will be paid off. My commute is something awful...oh well at least I'll hopefully get a new Prius every five years or so.

Thanks for the TSB information. I did get squeaky breaks during the cold weather, but now that it is warmed up I don't hear it near as often. I'll wait till next winter to determine if I'm still set on getting this fixed. Thanks!

I could have sworn my squeak was from the front brakes... but like others, it has subsided lately. It's also not as cold outside.

I kept telling my advisor that it was coming from the front as well...so we will see once they install the updated shims. The squeak was very faint when it was about 70-80 degrees here in CA for a couple weeks. It is back this week since we are in 50's and rainy. So I'd agree that cold weather is playing a role. I wonder if any owners with VIN's that have the updated shims from production can report if this truly is a non-issue for them? BTW, I love my Prius but I agree with Darenko that it is a bit embarrassing when my shiny new green machine is squeaking through our parking lot as I take my Honda and GM loving co-workers out for lunch. :)

Here on the Frozen Tundra of Central Florida...I have not yet heard eigther the squeal of delight or the console rattle of doom...but I sympathize with those unfortunate enough to suffer Northern climactic trauma...What I notice now is how much solar gain this interior is getting...too bad I did not get the solar cooling package...guess I will investigate window tint posts....

Okay it has been a full week now since the updated shims were installed...so far so good...the squeak is gone.

By the way, I have been told that all GEN III's produced after November 2009 have these updated shims...mine has a production date of May 2009.

Hope this helps others who are experiencing the issue.

On my February build II, I'm hearing this reverse squeak break as well...think I'll consult my local dealer. Thanks for the report.

    +1

Had it done, and replaced the blurry A/C display, when the car was in for the 10,000 mile service.

Thanks for the update on this T-SB. I back out of my driveway everyday and I have noticed when it is cold and/or wet my brakes squeek and grab. I had been chalking this up to weather but it is now sounding like something I should have checked.

I finally got this fixed last week, but noticed this weekend that it has produced a new brake sound when applying the brake when coming to a complete stop (screaching brake noise). Going forward or reverse. Hopefully its not something that will last as it's hard to re-produce constantly in the same manner (unlike the squeak), but happens every time I drive the car. It's almost as annoying as the squeak and its louder.

Back to the drawing board for me if it doesn't go away. This brake shim problem is rather annoying since I dealt with it for the last 8 months. I keep telling myself, its not a Chevy, its not a Chevy.....

Same here. Yesterday was a beautiful day so I drove with the windows down, and there was a horrible screeching sound every time I stopped (for the last few seconds, as soon as I got under ~5 MPH). Very annoying--and embarrassing. Of course no noise this morning, but the car is back at the dealer.

To me, that sound is like music because it is characteristic of the hybrid system regen.

Since you don't like it, maybe you could wrap soundproofing material around the inverter...

Does anyone have a pdf of the TSB yet? It helped to have it in my hand when I had the cloudy/blurry climate control screen replaced.
    Thanks!
