During our recent car-buying process that culminated in buying a Prius, I was watching out for any car that seemed to be designed for women. To me, the ultimate answer to the ultimate question "What do women want?" is simple: We want a place to put our purses.

When the Prius is redesigned, I hope Toyota will consider the purse factor. It wouldn't be difficult to put some sort of cargo net on the mid-car hump in front of the center console. It is a great spot to put a purse, but without netting it will fall on the driver's feet.

Any other ideas for making the Prius a better car for women?

Seriously, most companies employ women for this reason. But what would I do with a purse net? I don't think you would ever see something that specific.

Did you say "by Brad Pitt" or "to Brad Pitt"?

Actually this could help men too. It would also be a good place for a smallish backpack, or a great place to stash a bag of groceries on those quick runs to the store.

Jon Carrol, one of my favorite columnists, wrote a whole article saying that he would buy a car from the first car comapny to make one with a place for a purse. I know many men who carry bags of one sort or another who would appreciate at least having the option of having some sort of "carry-all" net installed in that spot. If it was called a "purse net," a lot men would shy away.

Frankly, I think the prius is well designed with women in mind. That vairable light make-up mirror would be nice, but they'd have to make bulb replacement really easy. One option I have yet to see on my car, and would be handy is a simple calculator program so you can keep track of your actual mileage as well as your reported mileage. This wouldn't be just for women either, my fiance pulls out his calculator after each tank. I used to just do it in my head and get close, but now that it's a Prius, I want an exact number.

When I need to keep my camera from sliding, I pull out the hidden drawer, and lay my camera corner first into it. It holds fine, but it's a small camera bag (just holds the camera). Perhaps a hook with a sticky back could be stuck to the front surface of the arm rest just above the drawer?

I think it's funny too, tiffanyjoy...

you gotta admire them for coming up with every stereotype in the book!

seriously though? how about a cargo container specifically for the REALLY COLD proteins and competent cells (in liquid N2 or dry ice) i have to haul around on occasion? i don't think that's too "feminine" but could i ever use that. instead i get a whole lot of cardboard to protect the interior. oh... guess we're not talking about the science geek women here, are we?

chocolate dispenser? noooo. it would get the car dirty! did i mention i'm obsessive about keeping my new car looking brand new? but how about a skittles dispenser? that's my recent favorite snack.

    Parting shots:

Evan: if only we heard "it's my fault" as often as it was really warranted....

Jay: aw, come on. we're not all that bad. :) (and I say this AFTER my comment to Evan because... I don't know. haha)

I see that Sigma Auto (one of the sponsors) has a "Bag Hook" that attaches to the head rest and allows you to hang a bag from that.

i don't get the purse holder thing... thats what the passenger seat and/or passenger is for :) what women generally want in a car is one that is reliable, the interior doesnt get dirty too easily/is easy to clean, good gas mileage, one that gets us a little positive attention from the opposite sex (not too much though, you creepies!) and has lots of cool toys in it! (that may just be me, though)

I would have gladly paid for the package that came with Johnny Depp. I'd take him over the 6-disc changer any day.
