I was having a look at the new online brochure and came across an image displaying the optional JBL premium sound system and noticed that there seems to be a subwoofer in the trunk... I thought this system which is included in the model V in the U.S. didn't come with a subwoofer... but the picture says otherwise... Is there anyone who can shed some light on this matter? P.S.: my dealer wasn't even aware of the very existence of the JBL system so he doesn't have a clue on this matter...
I found this document that shows the JBL Premium (Europe) with a sub. It sits on the spare. Whether all come with it or not?????
Hey! Nice find! Yes, the mounting instructions show that it is placed in the spare tyre compartment whether you have it or not! So the European JBL system DOES have a subwoofer! That's really good news! Thank you!
Interesting.... Wonder why ours doesn't have a dedicated subwoofer (though our front doors are technically woofers). Most have said that simply adding a subwoofer helped improved sound without having to swap out all the speakers for better quality ones.
The install manual looked fine. Are there any europeans with a jbl? Can you tell us how the tire mounted speaker sounds? Is it a sub, or a center channel like they put on the 2004-2009?
Typically spare-tire-mounted subs sit in the centre (where the jack goes in our car) so they can both a spare tire and a sub. (see the RSX Type-S as an example)
We ordered our Prius with a JBL sound system unaware of the subwoofer. The "JBL Sound Pack" or "JBL Premium Sound" -as it is marketed in Sweden- includes a 110w subwoofer -according to the brochure. Actually, I haven't ripped anything open in the back to see if there is indeed a subwoofer. But I promise to check soon. The sound system documentation came with an addendum which says you should switch off the ASL (Automatic Sound Leveliser) for the sake of sound quality.
Well in the meanwhile I received my car and there is indeed a subwoofer. Nothing ground shaking, but it does its job properly. To maximize its effect I removed that huge plastic thing that covers the spare tire. If you are interested in pictures of it I will take them and post them as soon I can!
