I've had that happen to me one time. If you stop, put it in park then back to reverse it should not do that.

I believe it happened to me because I had somehow activated something due to pressing the brakes while stopped. I was sitting in my running car at a gas station on my phone making plans to meet my friend. I noticed that anti-slip light was on (see pg. 244) at the time. I either activated hill assist - though I don't know how that would cause the lurching - or something else. Have you see threads on this issue? I know there are a couple and I can't remember if anyone figured out exactly why that lurching occurs.

That is the Hill Holder feature, designed to keep you from rolling down hill when starting.

You keep saying that but I'm not convinced. :p

Actually, I tested it out the other day to see how it looks with Hill Assist. I got HA to work and that slip indicator light started blinking and I heard a beep. Car remained still while I moved my foot to the accelerator.

But would this be what causes the lurching in reverse? Also, I've had that light come on and I'm pretty sure it didn't go away when I accelerated, so wouldn't that mean it's something other than HA? I now put it into P then back to D to make it go away.

And why does that manual say if that light comes on something is wrong? Does it come on for others? I'm going to have the dealer look at when I go in for the recall and and oil change.

I'm not saying that the Hill Holder is the cause of lurching in reverse. All that I am saying is that hearing a beep and seeing the traction control icon flash while pressing the brake is an indication that Hill Holder has been enabled.

Whether or not it relates to your lurching is something that you will have to figure out.

Had my car in for service, and told them NOT to install the update. Hit a pothole the other day going about 19 miles per hour. Of course, I was braking with the drivetrain so understandably, just the same as when I was downshifting in my bmw, I slipped a little. I was driving safe and had plenty of distance around me. My heart skipped a beat but I made it through. I'm trying to find some more conclusive evidence that the update is worth getting, and won't effect things. I've seen some disturbing posts here that the update causes other anomaly.

I got the update. I did notice the breaking problem before the update, and I still notice it now, as well. I don't know that the problem is all that big a deal, (if you know about it) but I am not impressed by the "fix" either.

I've had the update. It seems to me that the "here we go" sensation is still present, but is much shorter than before, and so there's less impact on braking.

I've been putting it off, because in my experience anything at a dealer is a huge hassle, but last week I bounced over a pothole slowing down for a red light and almost rear-ended a cop car. I've driven plenty of beaters in my time, so when the brakes drop out like that I'm used to just pressing the pedal harder. But that was kind of a shock. I think I will go ahead and get the update...

Those were my exact thoughts too. When you hit that pothole do you recall warning lights flashing and beeping? Did your brake pedal sink to the floor?

The "problem" didn't bother me before. Since there is no more snow on the ground, I haven't been able to get it to slip. I'm not about to abuse my brakes to get it to skid on gravel or railroad crossings, and such. If it's the same, I don't really care.

No other unusual behaviour from my brakes. I've only had one panic stop and it was stronger than i expected.

Good news! It took a month and some waiting for some special parts, but the little red Pruis is back on the road and working perfectly. Interesting though, that before I took it in I never was able to engage the hill holder function! Now that works, too! LOL!!

Yes, I haven't experienced the "hopping" while braking when reversing out of a parking spot. Took no time at all for my dealer to get it done.

I can still get mine to skip a beat going over a speedbump. The brakes seem a little tighter to me now. My wife said they seemed mushier.

I just had the ECU update this morning. The brake "skip" phenomenon was a rare occurrence for me before the update. I have not had one since the update. It does feel that the brakes are firmer to me. I kind of like it. Not that I couldn't have lived with the way they were before.

I noticed more problems with lagging acceleration at times and surge when first engaging the drive, not so much braking. seems better since the update but it's hard to judge since the problems were intermittent.

Yes I experienced...Yes I experienced it again ....yesterday...The sensation was much briefer than before and definitely...improved...Might have simply been antilock brakes functioning normally...hmmm Still happy with the car though...

This is my first post on Prius Chat... I've had my 10' Prius for almost a year now and have duplicated the brake problem. I was driving towards an intersection at the posted 45 speed limit. I was attempting to make a left turn at an intersection while beating the light. I was carrying a little too much speed and attempted to brake a little harder to scrub some speed before the turn. The road had a lot of ripples in the pavement and when I initiated braking before turning in, it did not react and I ended up having to scrub the speed in the turn instead of before the turn. Are most people driving a little too spirited when they duplicate this brake problem on dry roads? During the winter, I adjusted my driving accordingly and was counting on the brakes to play hell during snow driving. I must say that on snow and ice, sometimes it felt like the Prius was never gonna stop. I had the update done a month ago and have not duplicated the problem yet. I still feel that if the vehicle is operated safely that the brakes are more than adequate. Even race car like compared to my Jeep.

I had the problem prior to the ECU update ... mostly noticed it if going over a substantial break in the road while braking ... I think the problem is over-exaggerated, but it's certainly a surprising feeling when it occurs ... a slight bit of panic sets in.

Since having the ECU update done, it no longer occurs as dramatically as it did prior but I still notice it not braking quite a strongly as it should when going over said bumps in the road. Has the slight feeling it had prior ... much better however.

I think the computer just gets confused when a tire momentarily loses contact with the pavement ... at least that seems to make sense with my experiences.

Well, good news! As some of you may recall, our little red machine went in for the update the first week of March. We finally got it back the first week of April. On the up side, everything seems to be back to normal and working perfectly. There has been one incident since of the "brake thing", but since we drive the car conservatively, it was just barely noticeable. We've also been averaging above 55 mpg, and that's been mostly highway.
So, we'd like to think that all is well that ends well!!
