So the wife recently had her purse stolen and lost a set of keys. The keys that were lost are sensor self opening keys for the doors and car. When we called our local Toyota dealership in order to replace them they told us it would cost about $230. Does anyone know how we can get this for cheaper? They said it's $135 for the key and $90 for the programming. I would really appreciate any help we can get as we can't afford that price at the moment.

Not sure about the price, but what you have to think about aswell is that the dealership will erase the stolen/lost keys from the system, and reprogramme the car with new codes, theres not many garages that can do that apart from the main dealer.

This is true for the Gen.2 and I'll bet it's true for the Gen.3 also. The only way to get a fully functioning FOB is to get one a NEW one from Toyota and have a dealer program the car for it.

I was considering getting one for a backup and have it progammed by the dealer. I figured this would save nearly $200. What's the downside?

The downside is the smart function won't work. On the Gen.2 you will still have to insert the FOB into the slot to start the car and you have to use the remote buttons to lock/unlock the car. Can't remeber if the Gen.3 has a slot or not but it must have...?

Who is the dealer that quoted you $135 for the smart key? Sign me up! I've yet to find a dealer that is quoting under $300 (and that's for a basic fob-no sunroof, no airconditioner, etc.) and that price is not including programming.

While I am very happy so far with my car, these are simply incredible prices for what must be a $10 or maybe $20 part. I can buy a complete laptop computer for less money. While I expect to be soaked a little for certain things (e.g. popcorn at the theater), this is just ridiculous! Everyone should be complaining LOUDLY to Toyota about this.

Well then I have a question. On the Gen. 2 if the battery goes dead in the FOB or for some reason the car can't commincate with the FOB it was my understanding you could always insert the FOB into the slot to start the car. So in the Gen.3 is there is no slot and the battery in the FOB goes dead i assume there is no way to start the car? Is this correct?

You open the door with the metal key that is hidden/inserted in the fob and hold the fob to the start button and start the car when the battery in the fob is dead. It's in the manual; never tried it myself.
