Would you buy an extended warranty on a Prius? I was offered a 5yr/60k bumper-to-bumper warranty from Zurich for $798. Do you think it's worth it or do you think that the Prius is reliable enough to skip the warranty? I know that Consumer Reports rates the Prius 65% better than average but I wanted to hear from Prius owners if they have had any problems after the bumper-to-bumper expired. Thank you everyone in advance.
No I would not. I think extended warranties are usually a rip off if, especially if you take good care of your car and have a reliable car such as the Prius. If you really want an extended warranty buy the Toyota Platinum warranty through this site, but wait untill your car is almost out of the 3 year warranty before you buy it. If you still want one have them give you a copy of it and read it, including the mouse print, and find out what is not covered.
I bought the extended warranty for $980 back in Nov 2003 for my 2004 Prius. It is now March 2010 with 95,000 and no claims. Would I buy a warranty again? Probably not.
This topic has been well-debated (here and on every other auto forum I've visited)--try a search and you'll get more opinions. I vote no.
I did buy the extended 7 year, 100K warranty on my 2004 Prius, back in October of 2003, luckily I negotiated a decent price at the time ($925), however, at the time I traded in the 2004 Prius (end of January 2010), I had 80K miles and 6.25 years on the car, and never used the warranty. I am supposed to get like $75 back, on the prorated time (still had 9 months left), but I would not do it again, and did not buy it on my 2010 Prius. The cars have been proven to be built so well, it is not needed.
I wanted to buy extended warranty on mine but they adviced me not to (The dealer) They said when the car after nearly three years and the orginal warranty is about to expire then buy the warrty if you still want it then.
In Belgium, we are very lucky : All the Toyota are 5 year warranty (for free). http://priuschat.com/forums/members/lunabelgium-albums-my-luna-picture3954-our-luna-carry-bicycles.html
You guys are very lucky. You sure? The whole world gets 3 years but you guys? What so special about Belgium? They need to get their sales?
I buy it primarily for peace of mind. On my '05, the air conditioning compressor went out and the warranty paid $1,400, so I came out ahead. I had a wheel bearing fail on my '04 Highlander ($350) so I have recouped around half the cost of the warranty (so far) on that car. Interesting point here is that as reliable as the Toyota is, things do fail. I would be reluctant to buy an extended warranty from a third party. I've seen too many horror stories about these companies failing, leaving their customers holding the bag. You can get the Toyota warranty with more mileage from Troy for not a heck of a lot more and have the peace of mind of knowing it's backed by the factory and will be accepted with no hassle by any dealer.
