Downsized from minivan to '07 Prius as kids are grown. Love the Prius but looking at ways to expand cargo capacity on occasion (misc gear & possibly bikes or kayak. After researching other options I think a small trailer would be the best choice (less wind drag & easier loading than roof rack system; less stress on rear suspension & easier hatch access than than hitch-mounted carriers -- plus I already own an X-cargo carrier I could strap on a trailer). I know Toyota says don't tow w/Prius, but CW seems to be up to 1000 lbs GW should be OK. Problem is finding a basic lightweight trailer that takes cargo box or hardware for bike/kayak & doesn't cost a fortune. I've seen a few online for $300 or so but I can't tell if they'd be adaptable for these various uses. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Careful, towing anything however small might void any warranty you might still have. I bought a older small pickup truck for the instances I need to haul stuff to the dump, but that might not be an option for you. I've carried pretty big stuff in my Prius with the seats down. I carried a kitchen table and six unfoldable chairs in my Saab 900 one time! do not know if I could do the same in the Prius, maybe so!
I use a Sportsrig: SportsRig Micro Trailers: Kayak Trailer. Bike Trailers. Lightweight trailer for kayaks, bikes, canoes, cargo, camping gear, boats, storage boxes. Manufacturer and dealer. USA Made trailers for your vehicle. Eco-friendly trailers for fuel efficiency. They are great trailers, and exactly what you are looking for, except that they are not inexpensive. On the other hand, you get what you pay for. Tom
