Ok give me your feedback. I have offered a chance to go for Gen2 for not losing any money at all. Basically I bought my Gen 3 for £18,000 and now I can sell it for £19,000 (don't ask me how) and plan to use this money to buy a £8,500 Gen 2 for 22,000 miles. What do you think?
Obviously ... it is your decision. But it would not interest me in any way, shape or form. I feel the G3 is far superior to the G2 .... I could not be any more satisfied with a vehicle than I am my vehicle.
Financially speaking a great deal! Is the price of the gen 2 reasonable (I don't know UK prices)? The reason I ask is if it is way below market value then I would ask more questions as to the history of the car. Most importantly was it involved in an accident; or was it ever salvage. It would be to your advantage to do a history search on it Good luck,
Yes T Spirit is the top of the line here. Has 17 Inch wheel, with satnav, bluetooth, HDD audio and mine has added accesories such as all the chrome trims, chrome boot protector, DAB Radio, Iphone USB connector, Mud guards, boot liner, Protection pack, style pack. The only accessories that I havn't bought and are going to buy is the LED pack (led lights) but right now I am using HIDs which are interfering with the radio. Was going to get the cargo net but not sure which one to get or if it is worth it. Was also going to get Wind Deflector but thought that might be ugly so decided to drop the idea. Didn't want to buy a roof rack because I have seen what kind of damage it can do to the paint. So I am running out of accessories to buy (the genuine ones). But chaning back to Gen 2 will save me a lot of money.
Well I am going to find out tomorrow. But since my bro works for toyota the fleet guys have offers to give him for second hand gen2 prius. The one I mentioned are not from Toyota dealer but private but yes the deal seems to be too good to be true at the moment. But I defnitly can off load my car for £19k ($29,070).
If the gen2 checks out (see prior comments) I would take the deal. The gen2 is a great car and at 22K miles it has a long life ahead of it.
If you've had the Gen 2 and was happy with it then I don't see why not. Personally I can't see myself downgrading to even the 15" wheel Gen 3.
As long as you realize the technologies being lost and plan to mitigate them: loss of coolant heating system - the UK NHW20 doesn't have the thermos for holding hot coolant and the ZVW30 heats the coolant from exhaust gas. Mitigation: add a block heater. loss of 1.8L engine - the NHW20 1.5L engine lacks cooled exhaust recirculation so at high power settings, it adds fuel to reduce exhaust gas temperature. Mitigation: add an RPM gauge and drive to stay out of high power, inefficient regions, may lead to higher fuel consumption at speeds above 105 km/h. EV button - standard in the ZVW30, it may be optional on the NHW20. Mitigation: many aftermarket hacks available. electric water pump - provides only the coolant load needed, not a fixed ratio at all temperatures and power settings. Mitigation: none published. It is a reasonable deal although some important technologies will be left behind. GOOD LUCK! Bob Wilson
I don't see mention of year or trim level for the Gen II. If I were considering such a change, those would be significant factors.
Yes I know it is a superior car. and I know it looks much better but I do save myself £11,000 ($16,830) for something that is as close as good. All this is for the money not because I think the Gen2 is anyway form better except the materials are probably better. We will see what happens. I am in turmoil at the moment.
If you go back to Gen II you can take all your savings towards the soon coming plug-in Prius! ... as you can see there are lots of options and things to consider.
i have an 08 with 20,000 miles and absolutely love it. i've been following all the genIII posts and agree it's probably a better vehicle, but how much better? mpg? does not seem like much. roominess? power? i don't like the center console much, i think they could have made better use of the space for cupholders and storage. i'll probably drive one eventually to see for myself but i may hold out for the plug in. i just don't feel like there is enough of a difference. and a lot of complaints about rattles and other things. whatever choice you make, all the best!
You have not said what year the Gen 2 is, and what the trim level is, makes all the difference. I traded in my 2004 Gen II for the 2010 Gen III, the car had 80K miles on it, and would probably have gone another 80K... I just wanted to upgrade it, before it lost all value. I would stay with the 2010, of course it depends on what year the Gen 2 you are looking at is, if its more than 2 or 3 years old, I would not do it.
Umm.. the Gen 2 had 16" alloys as standard equipment in the UK for all years. That's pretty good but that's also some heck of a loss of value for the Gen 2 that only has 22,000 miles. I mean a Gen 2 ranged from £17,000 to £21,000 when new! Oh and how'd you buy your T-Spirit for £18,000? I thought they were selling for an RSP of £21,000?
The RSP at that time was £21,500 ($32,895) Oh we had something called Scrappage scheme from the Government which deduct £2,000 if you trade in your old car over 10 years old. Plus my bro works for toyota so family member gets a staff discount of £1500, so I saved myself a total of £3,500 ($5,355).
Thank you Bob, thats great, I didn't know about the heating tech involved in the new gen3 compared to gen2. As for EV button I never used it except my wife so I don't think I lose much.
That's awesome! That is a pretty penny! T-Spirit for the price of a T3. Ohh there's good deal. Don't forget that the 1.8 litre engine is completely beltless on the Gen 3 which means everything that's generated from the engine goes to powering the vehicle. All accessories are electrically operated. ECO Mode also reduces heat output and lowers the temperature threshold that allows the engine to shut off, thus letting the engine shut off earlier (As long as you don't require a lot of heat). EV Drive button is standard on the UK model but the Gen 2 does not have an SKS option in the UK ( no idea why).
How Bad Do You Need the Money ? If you don't, why consider a used car with the problem potentials of a car someone else disposed of, when you have a new and more advanced version of the car that only you owned ? If you must, then I guess you must, but I wouldn't do it if I didn't have to have the money.
