Azimuth, your car does not have the 20pin harness, so you need to use the 87-up harness and connect the wires manually. I used crimp on connectors, insulated kind which are covered with plastic. I crimped a male connector on one harness, and a female one on the other (obviously you need to buy both male and female connectors), then connected them together. If I ever need to change something, or made a mistake, I can always disconnect and reconnect. All the metal in the insulated connectors are covered so nothing gets short circuited.

Another tip. I stripped more wire than needed and carefully bent the exposed wire into "u". Then inserted the entire "u" into the connector and crimped. It was a much more secure connection because the wires that came with the harnesses tend to be thin.

Because I have JBL I used the PAC TATO which comes with all the harnesses.

On the PAC-SWI, only three wires are used for the Prius: White, Black and Red. The white wire is what you connect to the harness and the 560ohm resistor.

green curry expert, Where did you get those crimp connectors. Today I've tried Lowes, O'reilly auto parts, Autozone and Radio Shack, none have 18-22awg connectors.

Got them at a place called "parts source". I think it's only in Canada. If you don't have any tools, you can get a crimp and a set of connectors at crutchfield. I don't think those connectors are insulated, so you need to cover them with electrical tape after you connect them.

Try finding auto parts stores that sell to mechanics (parts source sells to mechanics, in fact, the store in located in an area with lots of garages). They should have a full line of parts like this.

You mentioned that the VSS cable was on the wiring harness. I did not find that to be the case. Do you know for sure which wire it is?
Also, any idea where the reverse signal is on the package II?

There is a 20 pin connector that attached to the oem radio. There is nothing connected to it now, but vss is on pin 3 of that connector.

The reverse signal is the same on all prii. Look at his pictures and descriptions on the second entry in this thread. The reverse is on the 64 pin connector, under the panel by the parking brake.

    green curry expert,

Sorry to resurrect this older thread, but I see in your labels for the wiring harness that you mentioned a "dimmer". What did you use for this?

I have reviewed the wiring diagram for the JBL system, and there is no mention of a dimmer control wire there (but in the non-JBL version there is a wire - orange if I remember correctly). I am going to "start small" and install an aftermarket iPod interface with its own display (Kenwood KOS-A300) and it has a connection for a dimmer wire. Kenwood tech support says that this connection is simply to tell the unit when the cars lights are on, and it then dims the display for "night mode".

Can you provide any guidance for me? I don't know if the Canadian Premium package has the same wiring as the US version Prius IV with JBL (non-nav)...

    Thanks!
    Jeff

The dimmer wire tells the headunit if the dashboard lights are on or not (eg: when you turn the headlights on) so if your dashboard lights up, your radio will too. If you don't disconnect the original radio, you will have to use a wiretap to "splice" into the wire (see my pictures earlier in the thread for the speed wire installation) because the wire would already be connected to your original radio. I can post the diagrams to show you which wire if you need.

Update: Found the schematic, the illumination wires are as follows (on non-NAV JBL cars):

    L40 pin 12 illumination (-)
    L40 pin 2 illumination (+)

Since I haven't posted in a while I should update a bit on how the Pioneer unit is doing.

    Software/map updates:

I updated to the Z120 interface and map update. Much better interface but I'm not sure if it was worth the price as Pandora is not available in Canada. I don't use the MusicSphere function.

    Stability:

The only issue I've seen so far is the unit occasionally has no sound until I restart the car. I traced this back to the iPod interface of the Pioneer unit. If I don't connect the iPod it never happens. Hope they fix this in a future update.

    GPS:

Has been amazing so far. Found places in rural Ontario without issues. AVIC feeds for desktop, Blackberry, and iPod Touch are handy for entering address ahead of time (before getting into the car). I can even export the list of addresses on an SD card and back them up on my computer, very nice!

I found that an in-dash GPS also helped me find places in the dark/unfamiliar surroundings even if route guidance is not enabled (eg: I didn't enter a destination). Just being able to see where I am, and what the next street is is so helpful.

Downloadable POI's! I have every Starbucks and Timmy's locations displayed as little icons on the map screen.

    Other features:

I can use bluetooth audio to listen to online radio stations with my phone.

It remembers which song was playing from a USB thumb drive even if I disconnect and reconnect it.

The recently released Z130 has free traffic, and this feature was not back-ported to the Z110 that I have. I hope they include this in a future update (I'm willing to buy an accessory if needed). MSN direct is expiring soon.

Displays the name of the song that's playing on FM radio. I think this feature alone is worth the effort to install this aftermarket NAV.

In conclusion I'm pretty pleased so far.

    Thanks green curry expert...

I actually found that info after subscribing to the techinfo site for 2 days. I used Pin 2 (green wire) - as this one was the one you mentioned as telling the HU whether the lights are on. Pin 12 is actually a pulsed signal that I assume communicates the lighting level to the HU for the level of interior lighting.

Thanks for the update on the Pioneer HU - it will probably be a while before I drop some coin on a new HU - I am sticking with my external iPod interface from Kenwood for now.
