That's what I'm waiting for... But I've only had the car for a couple weeks.

I believe all 2010 built cars have the oil fill cap stamped SAE 0W-20. I'm not sure of the 2010 models built late 2009?

Does the new maintenance schedule mention the one time use of 5W-20 instead of 0W-20 if 0W is not available?

Yes, but 5w20 "Must be replaced with 0W-20 within 5,000 miles/6 months" according to the documentation.

Cool! I don't know why I'm showing so much interest in this when I'm still 6 months or 4,900 miles away from the first 5K.

So is any other maintenance suggested/required for 'normal driving conditions' at 5K, 15K etc?

Does anyone else find it odd that Toyota requires replacing 5W-20 after 5,000 miles?

Isn't it true that any 0w-rated oil must be synthetic, because crude oil cannot be refined to that grade, without "synthesizing" processes? If all 0W oil is synthetic, then there's no longer a need to argue the synthetic point...

Now, also, Toyota still says that a higher viscosity oil may be better for high-temp, high-speed conditions, but this refers to the "20" vs "30" number. Let's just close this discussion!:deadhorse:

There is an interesting section in the User's Guide that may explain the difference to some degree. It mentions that 0W has a better low temp viscosity for starting. 5W is higher for starting. The '20' is the oils high temperature viscosity. It sounds like Toyota agrees that there isn't much reason to be concerned but that because the viscosities aren't the same they want to hold off endorsing 5W for a while. Allowing 5W at all just makes it doable if you get stuck somewhere and don't have 0W.

That reminds me. Does the new maintenace schedule or the letter mention anything about mixing? Of course if you actually need to add oil even between 10K the engine may be having some situation you need to get fixed?

Is synthetic oil any more flammable. How about washing it out of clothes if it gets on you or removing its stain?

Just got my official notice from Toyota stating that I can change my oil every 10k miles. :D Also received an updated/revised maintenance manual. They still want you to have service done every 5k miles for tire rotation and general checks though. It's just the oil change part of the 5k service that has changed to 10k.

Re: Some 2010 Toyota Vehicle Oil Change Intervals Officially Revised To 10000 miles/1 year (verified

The oil recommendation is based on the EPA mileage test. They use 0W20 for the mileage test so the EPA requires that 0W20 be the only oil recommendation. There is a caveat that only permits different viscosities under very special circumstances for a shorter period. There is a link on this site somewhere to that page of the EPA manual but I can't find it right now. My opinion is that Toyota didn't choose 0W20 because it was better for the engine, they chose it because the engine would tolerate it and it gave them the best EPA mileage results.

I don't think a 0Wxx oil has to be synthetic but all of the ones I have seen are. Jayman from Winnipeg (my oil expert) posted that he had seen or maybe even used an Esso 0Wxx oil that was non synthetic in the far North or Canada. I spent a year in the Antarctic a long time ago and we had no such oils but we sure could have used them.

I received my official notice about the 10 K oil change last week; today I canceled my prepaid maintenance contract and expect an almost complete refund (I have not had my 5K service yet). the Santa Rosa CA dealer finance guy had not seen anything official himself; he had to call the regional rep. So now they are selling revised prepaid maintenance deals that appear to be not worth it (reluctantly confirmed by the Toyota finance guy). For example, 2 year 20K for $500+, for two oil changes and two tire rotations. Oil changes are more $$$ with synthetic, but paying as you go seems best.

Read att. to post #138. which applies to all new Toyotas using 0W-20 oil
    Severe driving comprises driving:
    • Mainly on dusty roads - unlikely for most of us
    • Consistently towing a trailer - not very likely for Prius
    • Using a car top carrier - again, not very likely for Prius
    • Primarily short trips below 32 deg. - Possible for northerners
    • Consistantly at slow speed use with much idling - N/A for Prius ICE
My take from the Toyota letter attached to post #138 is that I could extend my oil change interval towards 10,000 mi. I have not received any notification. In fact, after my 1st 5k oil change, Toyota service pasted a 3K reminder sticker on the windshield! Prius 3G is still an outlier for Toyota service.

The oil in question is Esso XD-3 Extra, which is one of my favorite oils. It's a Heavy Duty oil intended for severe diesel and gasoline service

    http://www.esso.ca/Canada-English/Files/Products_Lubes/IOCAENCVLESEsso_Xd-3_extra.pdf

The 0W-30 and 0W-40 are blended but use PAO. I used the 0W-40 in my FJ with very good results

The best part is that one can get a 4 litre jug for $21. That's a lot cheaper than Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec

I got my 1st change done @2500miles last november. The dealer (Grossinger in Chicago) had a standard price of $29, plus an automatic unadvertised discount. For the details of this transaction, please see my post 12/3/2009 #55 and a followup #66: http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...ngoing-oil-changes-toyota-prius-dealer-6.html

I don't know if their price has changed since, but I plan to get a 2nd "break-in" oil change at 7500 next month. At $29, I dont mind it at all.

I received the 10k revised maintenance manual today... I still dont mind.

Found the 10K oil change posted on the official toyota web site (toyota.com) in the owners section under maintenance. It lists what vehicles affected and what conditions it applies too.

Received in the mail Saturday the new Warranty & Maintenance Guide. Can we get the firmware updated in these cars to represent the new maintenance schedule. (I'm really interested in the unannounced benefits of the fw updates.)

Toyota has said the will not upgrade the firmware and they still want the other items done as shown (i.e. 5K intervals). But, as with all maintenance items, you can do them yourself and keep a record. Fortunately the maintenance reminder is easy to reset.

Did they make the deal on the car with you, then put you in a little room with the finance guy and try to cram a whole bunch of costly extras down your throat? (E.G. extended warranty, prepaid maintenance, roadside assistance, etc. They tried to sell me about 20 of these.)

The reason they try so hard to sell them to you is that they make over 50% profit on every one of them. No, it is not worth it.

The cost of your oil changes for synthetic oil is going to be higher. As per the Service Mgr. at my dealership, addressing attendees at a new owners dinner: "Get ready for $65.00 oil changes, because the synthetic oil is more expensive", (maybe double?), and because at that time they didn't have it in "bulk" yet.
If you continue to get oil changes for $29 someone is not either charging you correctly, or you aren't getting synthetic oil.
I did my own first oil/filter change. The oil, Mobile I from WalMart was $6.27 qt.. Four quarts + the filter, w/tax, it cost me something around $36 for doing the job myself. Most expensive oil/filter job I've ever done. So how is a dealer going to do it for less?.... Unless it is a "Loss Leader", to get you in for something else. This 0W-20 oil is what my English friends call : "Fairy Pee!" But hey if that's what we need to use and they honor the warrantee for it.... what do I care?? :)

That's the price now, but the Prius is not the only car that uses this oil. Several other Toyota models and many non-Toyota models now use this exact same oil, so it shouldn't be long before it is available as bulk-oil at dealers and at lower prices at discount stores.
Maybe in another year or so.
