Would you buy a 2010 Prius today?

It'd be helpful if he/she could post some details that I asked for at http://priuschat.com/forums/dealers-pricing/76952-whats-worth-in-trade.html and they actually got back to us instead of whining about "bad mileage" and giving questionable numbers.

I did on Monday while the San Diego guy was on the loose. I would do it today even though hoaxers and inept drivers will continue to be a pain.

 

Ordered one last Friday. Should get it next Wednesday. The anticipation is making the time crawl. Wife wanted red with Navigation so we have to wait.

 

Yes. No hesitation. I love this car and think that our reactionary, sensationalist press is hyping recent events beyond reasonable limits.

I remember when several different SUVs were made with a wheel base too narrow for the height and weight of the vehicle. As a result, people found themselves flipping with little provocation. A person could swerve to miss a dog and find themselves rolling down the road. This was not like the Prius incidents, where a software patch or minor tweak could fix the problem, but an uncorrectable design flaw based on raw physics. Yet there was hardly a mention of it in the press.

Oh, but if it's one of those weird hybrids, then it's all over the place. I mean, they're so different and strange, and probably only driven by freedom-hating, treehugging communists, right?

 

I would buy in a heart beat. Only wish I was in the market now as opposed to this past December when my jeep lease was up. In december there was not much bargaining, but now, oh man, it would be fun beatin' up those sales guys.

First thing I did though when the doo-doo started to hit the fan about Toyota's problems was buy a load of Ford stock. I'm hoping my gains will pay for the Prius!!!!!

 

I wouldn't. It's not better for the enviornment, and with these new developments, your life (and your families if you have children) could be in danger.

I bought my 2010 Prius IV the day before the brake issue was officially acknowledged. I love the car. I traded in a 2006 Prius that I'd driven for 96,000 miles. I loved that car as well. I had no mechanical problems with the 2006 Prius; I've gotten the break upgrade for the 2010, nothing else, and I don't anticipate anything.

I have no reservations recommending that you proceed with this purchase. It's a great car. I find that the Gen III gets better mileage than the Gen II; I love features like "Eco mode," "EV mode" (comes in handy in jams on the capital beltway in DC)

Gadgetswise, I like the iPod USB interface, the fact that the bluetooth phone loaded 800 Outlook Mobile contacts (many with multiple phone #s) in seconds, and I'm becoming a fan of heated seats.

I'm already starting to fantasize about what will come in Gen IV.

 

I just leased a 2010 Tuesday, so that's a yes. I was happy to get a price on the car that was more than half erased by what I will save each month on fuel vs. our old minivan, capitalizing on the hysteria perpetuated by incidents like that in San Diego. Anyone whose knowledge of driving an automobile includes thinking that his car might "flip" by shifting into neutral on dry pavement hasn't got a clue. Probably best if he turns in that license, for all our sakes. If nonsense like that story lets me lease a car today for probably half what it would have cost me last year at this time, count me in.

 

I would even settle for another Prius if Toyota would stand behind their owners. However, instead they are really advertising the zero percent interest thing. Big deal. It does nothing for the fact the value of my 2006 has dropped $5K in a year, making it impossible to trade off. Toyota will have to step up to REAL incentives like GM uses in order to sell their cars now. Come on, Toyota, GM is offering $1k for Toyota trades! Can't you at least MATCH THAT??? They're also offering an additional $3K cash back. Let's see that on Toyotas and maybe they can get back some market share. Until then, no thank you.

 

I suspect if a tree fell on mine and it were declared "totaled" another new Prius would be my first consideration. The media circus and pending law suits do not reflect on the car as far as I am concerned. They reflect on the state of the news media and the American legal system.

What would concern me is the quality control problems I have experienced with my present Gen3, i.e. rattles, missing bolts, things out of adjustment, etc. But these are the kinds of things that crop up with new models from time to time, it's just that this Prius seems to have more of them than any other car I have owned. Also the state of Toyota's dealerships means I have found it necessary to fix a lot of the problems myself, I don't really like the idea of having to repair and adjust my own new car.

So yes, I might well buy another Gen3 Prius but I would probably wait until the 2011, or even 2012, model is out and hope it is put together better.

 

Sorry to hear about your problems...I bought mine last September, and so far it's been perfect. I would not hesitate to buy one if I was in the market.

In fact, I just bought my third Toyota (2010 RAV4) to replace my aging (and increasingly repair-prone) 2004 Chrysler Pacifica. So far, just 200 miles on it, but so far, so good.

 

The good news about my problems is they are not to serious, that is, the car runs and drives great. I adjusted the headlights and the cruise control cancel myself. There is, apparently, an effective brake ECU reflash available if I want to have it done. That pretty much takes care of the driveability issues on my car. I should, in fairness, add that it really does drive nicely. I am also very pleased with the new 10K mile OCI.

The problem I am frustrated with is the rattles. They are hard to locate but I have found and fixed several. There are others I thought I had found and when I disassembled something and fixed them found I didn't fix the rattle at all. Such is life.

I'll keep trying and eventually arrive at a point were I'm willing to live with the rest of them. Certainly not worth losing any sleep over, but rattle fixing is not my favorite hobby either. I am not one of the people that has to have everything absolutely perfect, I am willing to accept a few rattles but I would really like to be rid of the more annoying ones.

 

I would still buy a Toyota today but if I was buying used the car would have to have the new accelerator pedal update including Brake Override. And in either case, new or used, the dealer would have to test drive with me demonstrating to their satisfaction that I know how to properly brake, put the car into neutral, and correctly emergency-stop with the 'Ready' button. One of the end results of this whole mess is going to be that the average Prius driver does not know how to properly deal with emergency situations and whose fault is that? It will be very interesting. Also, and tragically important is that drivers should not be allowed to rent or be loaned cars that they are not familiar with, especially if some function are radically different. And it's not enough if you sign a legally binding waiver for yourself and your family if you end up killing anyone else or damage other property.

Even the first few days I drove my 2010 Prius after turning in my 2007 Prius I was reaching for the wrong spots to find the 'Power' button and the 'Shift' lever. And I drove a RAV4 for one day which was disorienting at times and very jumpy from stops. I am an experienced driver and was very careful until I felt more comfortable with the car but even that only goes so far when you are in the wrong place at the wrong time, and something goes wrong.

It looks like I may only have one rattle/vibration. I haven't located it yet partly because it depends on finding the right stretch of road and speed.

The list of problems being tracked here will be very useful. My dealer will love me for it if they knew. I think it is helpful to feel like you discovered the problem or concern and only mention PriusChat when they get into denial.

 

Yes, you should get a much better deal on a 2010 Prius now than before. However, the resale value of a Toyota probably will not be too good for a few years. Same problem that the Audi had years ago. If I was in a market for a new Prius, I would buy one now.

 

I gave it a lot of thought and thanks to all the good information I found on this site, I went for it and my new 2010 Silver Prius IV with the solor roof is supposed to be in on the the 16th.

I just did. I traded my '05 with 165K for a '10 Prius IV with the Solar Pkg. The '05 was the best car I ever owned and the '10 is even better. Some people thought I was crazy, but they didn't own one. I love it, the price and incentives have never been better, and I still believe in Toyota.
