I hope they do that and get to the bottom of it. They should also probe other cases from other manufacturer as well.

And if it turns out the guy had his mats trapped under the pedal or worse, was making it all up for compo will they prosecute him?

    If not, why not?

I was thinking the same thing. It would be pretty extreme to pull a 'prank' like this, but I guess worse has been done (Balloon Boy).

With the computers cars have in them today, they should be able to clearly determine what the cause was and if this was a hoax or the real deal.

Until then, I kinda feel for the guy. That had to have been a pretty scary ordeal, and I'm sure he was trying to stop the car. I'm just surprised that the engine would have overpowered the brakes, especially if you were to really hammer them good.

I smell some fish, because he said he was pulling on the pedal to release it. Now tell me, why in the heck would he attempt to reach down and grab the accelerator pedal while doing over 90mph, while the gas pedal was supposedly stuck?

Maybe a nearby motorist was using an old fashion CB radio with an illegal shortwave amplifier on a high megahertz frequency thereby emitting high levels of electro-magnetic energy and causing the highly sensitive instrumentation in the Prius to malfunction. I think the Prius instrumentation has some sort of emf insulation which will shield it from all interference except for solar flares or a nuclear detonation.

I understand that you think all the talk of bad brakes and cars accelerating is bogus. A lot of people would disagree with you tho. I have driven toyota's since 1972 and like to think I am as loyal as any.

But if the cars (Prius) are accelerating out of control I do not want to risk losing my wife to a tragic accident. If the cars are at risk we need to know.

Your levity is fine but if your wife was injured in a 2008 prius today instead of the man who got away safe in california I bet you would not be so flip.

Galaxee, does this mean you think the issue isnt important or serious?

I have always trusted you and your technician hubby. The man says it was not a carpet issue. "it just took of on it's own"

Maybe he was speeding by a CHP car and decided to call 911 to get out of a ticket?

The car is as safe as the nut behind the wheel. If you KNOW how to drive and operate the vehicle this situation won't be an issue.

Shifting into Neutral will stop the car unless you are driving down a mountain. Shifting into Neutral & applying the brakes will stop the car.

I just saw the other thread about eitehr putting and holding the shifter into Neutral, or pushing the park button and holding it, or pushing in the power button.

The park button seems the best to me in an emergency.

I hope Toyota figures this out soon.

Hmmm.... feel very strange about the whole Prius-runaway incident too.

It's very odd timing all these recall happen all at once.. Can't help thinking who (company) will be benefit from Prius / Toyota scare .

I been observing Prius for years before purchase @2008.... It is the MOST common Taxi-vechile in Vancouver area in Canada (Gen I~III). Never seen one Run-away incident on Canada Newpaper... with Great amount Prius-Taxi roaming around the city 24/7 for past 5~6 years ? Long-term Track-record is what I put my trust in :D

All I know 2008 and older Prius are made in Japan.

Canada version don't have Auto-Park program or EV button.

I have to tell you all that I have been WAITING for someone here on PriusChat - someone who has been driving their Prius and posting here for multiple years - to encounter a runaway Prius or braking situation. It's not that I want someone to get hurt it's that I simply do not believe all the sudden and out-of-nowhere reports that have been hitting the news on an almost daily basis.

Heck, I want to encounter the runaway Prius scenario. Seriously. I know what to do. I know how to stop the vehicle. I know how to call several of my friends during the entire ordeal and update my Facebook status to "Tony Schaefer is in a runaway Prius."
