I tried searching for this topic, but either couldn't find the right search box or use the right phrase, so here's my question: What battery goes in the key fob? Can I replace it myself? This is for a 2005 Prius. The symptom is the fob is not being recognized unless held close to the dashboard. Used to work fine in my pocket and in my wife's purse. Thanks (in advance)!
The battery is a CR-2032 available at Radio Shack and you can replace it yourself. Instructions should be in your Owner's Manual.
Following those directions I just can't separate the emblem cover: "After removing the key, continue to hold the latch and firmly push with your thumb behind the emblem to slide it off." -Nevermind, I was pushing the wrong way.
how long had you been using the fob in question. I noticed after two years of constant use, my main fob seemed to be generating a weak response from the entry system. Nayurally, I am interested in replacing the battery.
Both of the fobs have been in use since purchasing the car in July of 2005, so almost 5 years before replacing was necessary, not too bad.
I accidentally ran a fob through the laundry, washed and dryed, and it still works. Sturdy little things.
That's funny! Many small electronic devices are at least water resistant, if not water proof. Unless the circuitry actually shorts out thru water immersion, these things will survive. It is actually possible to wash an old filthy electronic box from the last fifty years IF: soap and water are used sparingly and the box (whatever) is dried out in Sun. Resistors,capacitors and inductors are usually safe, and the metallic base of course. In modern electronics the components are even safer from H2O. Don't throw it in the wash machine tho. The other day my significant spouse decided to throw our Double Canasta deck in the wash machine! no comment..................
