2010 Prius III. Can the 12 volt battery be charged with a slow charger without causing damage to electrical circuits? Additional questionadded later) 1. I am assuming that, while charging, nothing else in the car is turned on. 2.Also, I assume the 12 volt battery CANNOT be charged with a 12V charger (which would be plugged into a 120v AC circuit) at the location under the hood where a jump start would be effected. (the little black fuse box under the hood on the right hand side). To summarize from the good people who replied to my original question: 1. Yes, you can charge the 12V battery in the rear of the car as long as the charger is rated at no more than 4 amps.
I'm pretty sure this would be OK. Jump starting is much more likely to damage something, and the manual explains how to jump start, so I figure a slow charge is OK. I see there is a special place to connect up to, so use that terminal.
When the power is turned off (and it should be), the Hybrid battery is completely disconnected. So, regular battery only gets charged.
