Took my 2010 Prius in for the brake recall. They asked me if I had my 5,000 mile service yet. I asked them about the 10,000 mile interval and the had no idea of it. The advisor got the service supervisor and they showed me a copy of the old manual and said if I didn't do it, it would void my warranty.

I asked the advisor to look it up on the internet and he did find some info (I think it was this site). He talked to his supervisor and ended up telling me that all the dealers get together for meetings and if they had been notified it would have been brought up (funny, how it seems some Arizona dealers are aware of it). He also told me Phoenix would always be using the schedule for extreme conditions.

It is just annoying how out of touch some dealers seem to be or how bad communication is. It is possible that we may end up being in the extreme conditions schedule, but you can just tell that they think you are making stuff like this up when you ask them about it.

If your driving fits the extreme conditions in the Toyota guidelines, so be it. But you need not let such dealer scare tactics sway you too much. They are not providing the warranty, Toyota is. If Toyota can show that you drove extreme conditions, failed to service accordingly, AND damage resulted, then THAT damage would not be covered. If your stereo goes on the blink, I doubt the oil change would be the cause. So the warranty is not voided.

Of course, I'm not providing the warranty, either. And that is good for both of us.

According to the list of extreme conditions mentioned on this site with the announcement of the new interval, I don't meet any of them (heat was not listed).

I have emailed Toyota customer service with some questions and hopefully they will respond.

If the dealer doesn't know about the change yet, then they have to say 5K oil changes are still mandatory. Pointing them to this forum is not "proof."
However, if they still haven't heard anything about it and can't verify it with a phone call to Toyota, someone there is very lazy or incompetent.

This has been going on awhile, with many threads regarding the 10K interval. Can anyone point to definitive PROOF that this is now the policy. My latest call to Toyota yielded nothing other than the interval is 5,000 miles, and they don't have any idea if a change is coming.

YES I believe it's true. Scheduled a brake inspection, asked for an oil change while I was at it.
Service manager at Gates Toyota, South Bend, IN informed me the Oil Change interval is revised to 10,000 miles. Says I will be getting a letter confirming this soon.
Also told me the Software fix for the brake recall should be in this week.

If the regional official notice at the beginning of this thread and the confirmation by the Toyota USA team itself (also in this thread) are not definitive proofs, I don't know what will be.

Aren't we supposed to receive a notification from Toyota around now with the official update of the extended OCI? I logged into Toyota's owner login where I have registered my car, and there is no sign of this there. Even the maintenance schedule that I could download today from Toyota's website still has the old schedule. I am beginning to approach 10000 miles - what am I supposed to make of all this?

I think each dealership is waiting to personally receive some kind of official document from Toyota.
The dealers have ZERO incentive to acknowledge the change before the last possible moment since it will cut into their service department income.

I know my dealer includes 3year/36000 mi oil changes, and has refused to give a free oil change at 5k because of the change.

That sounds pretty official to me. If they have been notified of it, but refuse to acknowledge it because they have not received a signed letter, it is pretty dishonest. Don't give them your business and get your maintenance done elsewhere. Anyone can do oilchanges, brake inspections, and tire rotations.

Now here's an interesting thing:

My dealer readily acknowledges the new oil-change interval. In fact, when I took my car in for a 5K service/oil change a couple weeks ago, they sent me home. But I decided that I wanted to go ahead and do that first change now after all, so I had it into the dealership yesterday for a 5K service, including oil change.

The cost of this service was about HALF of what I used to pay when I took my 2005 Prius in. (The Gen II now lives with my daughter at college.) I don't know why the price would have changed, unless they know I'm not going to bring it in for other non-oil-change service if they keep overcharging me.

Ok, so they acknowledge it when it suits them. They know about the 10K interval if it costs them free oil changes, but have never heard of it if you're the one paying.
So, what happens to those who bought pre-paid service based on 5K oil changes? Do they get a refund or do they extend the mileage so you are covered for the same number of oil changes?

Went in for 10K service today (MA), dealer had no clue about 10K OCI. In the midst of all the recall madness, I doubt they're going to work very hard to institute a change that will make them less money. I was able to get the software update for the brakes. Cost of service was a few bucks less than at 5K (pretty sure the work done is the same) and dealer is giving customers $10 gift certificates.

I don't think it is. For one thing it ties you to one dealer for your oil changes, if they do a poor job and you need to go elsewhere or do it yourself you loose. You may also be paying them for things you don't want done, for example I only rotate my tires every 10K miles.

I Emailed the service manager at my dealer here in Detroit. I included the "Chicago" memo and a link to this thread. His answer was that he has nothing "official" from TMS although he and his regional manager have discussed the topic. So.... His recommendation to me was to stay on the 5K interval until this is "official". At about $70.00/oil change, I want this to be "official" ASAP. I mean how inept can Toyota be in not getting this information out to the dealers NOW?

I suspect it will likely get worse before it gets better. One extra oil change is not going to make a difference. Toyota will likely send out a freebee change anyway.

Folks, good news/bad news:

Let's start with the good. Official notifications began going out from Toyota Motor Sales to US customers this week regarding synthetic oil intervals. All notices should be out by the end of the week announcing the 10K interval change (unless you fall under the severe driving conditions type of use). Since it seems there's been so much going on in dealer land, I would highly recommend you take your letters with you to your dealership so you can avoid any additional he said she said regarding the intervals.

Now for the bad news: those who read the information/documents that were posted in this thread from an internal communication to the regional offices were unfortunately expecting a coupon to accompany their letters. I must apologize for us not knowing this sooner, but we have just obtained the new letter that went out this week.

Unfortunately, with everything going on for Toyota these days, the coupon was not something that we were able to include in the notifications. I'm sure this is disappointing and frustrating to many of you, and honestly, there's not much we can say beyond, things have changed drastically in recent months and something we were able to propose months ago is not something that was able to be brought to fruition this month. I'm terribly sorry that this is the case and wish we had better news to share with you on the subject. I hope those of you following the news will understand why this is the case.

We attended a "New Owners Dinner" a couple of weeks ago, and I brought up this change to 10K to the Service mgr. there. I've been changing oil in my vehicles for over 40yrs. and I got the exact response anyone should expect from him. He acknowledged that they had been notified of the change........ however he started in on how few owners would "qualify" for the 10K based on their use of the cars. In otherwords only the "cleanest" of usage would qualify. He didn't go into particulars, just tried to convince all there that the only thing to do was to utilize the 5K interval. What else would you expect him to do? It's money out of the dealerships pocket to "readily" acknowledge the change. What qualifies for 10K: NO dusty conditions driven in; NO short driving distances,(this will change based on the answer he gets when he asks you how far you drive on short trips, and how often you do those short trips) ; NO towing, (hopefully they won't even quote that one, for a Prius). I have two free services coming, at 2700 miles I did the first oil change myself. Now they will get to do the next two for me at 10K, and probably at 17.5K. I know what my driving conditions exist of, the dealership doesn't. I know I don't fall into the catagory for 5K oil changes, but for my own peace of mind (because of the filter, rather than the oil), I intend to "split the difference", to 7.5K miles. That is my thoughts on it until the warrantee is out anyway.

So far as I'm concerned this is all wishful thinking and Chicago must live in a different world. Sure, the desire and the rumor has been kicking around for months now but I just last week bought my new 2010 Prius and no one at my Prius dealer is saying, 'yes you can go 10,000 or 1 year between oil and filter changes'. Some of them have heard the rumors but there is nothing offical in writing. So what's going on Toyota? Are you having _more_ problems?
