I have found a Prius in the san francisco california area. It has 75000 miles, clean title, one owner. It is a basic Prius package, no gps, or stereo system. The lowest I could negotate the offer from 12950, was to 12150, including California registration. Is this a good deal? or is it not a good deal?
Wow, that car has been driven pretty hard.. I got all of 18,000 miles on my '07. You should ask the owner for his set of maintenance records.. If a car has been driven that hard, you want to make sure it has been properly taken care of. And bring a mechanic buddy along with you to look it over and make sure it has no signs of having repairs to fix major collision damage.
75k is a lot of miles for an 07. I just did my 30k maintenance yesterday on mine. Edmunds says the mileage adjustment is -$1757 for 75k miles on an 07. Private party price for a "Clean" car estimated at $14,576 for my zip code. You can run the same analysis at edmunds.com > click "research used cars" then drill down to get the Prius. Then on the Prius page, run a custom pricing report with the exact options, color, mileage.
Agreed on it being a ton of miles on an 07. I have only 41.5K miles on my 06 which is on the high side for me. How could it not have a stereo? I think even the packageless cars have at least a single disc CD player w/AM/FM radio.

Then is 62,000 miles also still high for a 2007? The dealer I was looking at would only go down to 13900 and it also the base model but it deos have the stability control. Is this a rip off? Maybe I should keep looking
I don't think 62K is too high. Don't know why people may think it is. I think that when cars have over 20K per year, my bet is that it's mostly or almost all highway miles which is better than city/surface street miles. Anyways, why don't you check the pricing through edmunds.com or kbb.com (Kelly Blue Book) yourself? BTW, if the car has stability control then it's at minimum a Package #2, which IMO is the sweet spot option package for the 2007. I did check the bluebook. Its around 16,000. I just want to be sure I am making the right decision and shouldn't wait for a better deal.
Honestly, I'd look for lower milage cars. You do have the advantage of being in a CARB state, so the warranty is longer, but still, thats a lot of miles.
12k including taxes and registration. That's a pretty good deal. 75k miles is high, but it comes down to how does the car drive. Go out and test a few more 2007's with lower mileage. Do they feel the same? Vibration? Engine noise? Anyhow, I'm not so concerned with 75k, but I'd like to know it was properly maintained and not a previous rental vehicle. Check the carfax. If it was a previous rental, walk away. There are lots of people who will disagree with me regarding rental fleet vehicles, but I assure you as a veteran of car renting, rental vehicles are driven to the ground. Their oil is changed every 5k miles, but I assure you, those vehicles are hurt real bad.
i've purchased two rental fleet cars in my lifetime. i have had no problems other than cosmetic (few scratches and interior stains). and the price??? ooooohhh the price...
I paid $13500 ($13000 + $500 dealer "handling fee" BS) several months ago here in Colorado for my 2007 with 45,000. It had a pretty basic package (VSC, smart key, CD/MP3 stereo). It's possible that I might have gotten a better deal if I had waited until the negative PR about Toyota really got big, but I didn't know that it would at the time (only the floor mat recall back then, not the pedal recall and all of the news stories). Of course, since then I've replaced a tail light that burned out, broken one of the clips in the dash (and scratched it up decently well) putting in my Parrot Bluetooth system, and gotten my windshield broken. Kind of hard to blame that on the car, though.
