This is just a heads up for anybody that missed the previous posts on this subject. The gist of it is that every new Prius comes with an alarm installed, and it can be activated by a dealer with the Toyota Scan Tool. The alarm isn't as fully featured as the extra money version (no glass breakage sensor, etc.), but it does go off if you unlock the door without using the key while the car is supposedly locked. I just took my Package 4 back to the dealer today, and the guys in the service department hooked me up. The process only took about 1 minute for the technician, and of course they did it free of charge. I went to the dealership armed with a printout of this post (the first one on this page) from Kyle. I'm looking forward to calling my insurance company on Monday and seeing if I can get a discount now that I had an alarm installed Cheers!
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(phileFriendly\";p=\"105869)</div> Not that I needed them to activate the alarm, as it already came enabled with the BC package, but my dealer charged me for enabling passive mode, and claimed it took them 2 houirs to do it. They would have charged me for the enable, if they would even do it. Any dealers in Tampa Bay that has a good service department? Sun Toyota isn't one of them. Friendly enough, but not accomodating.
I have a basic model - no SKS - so would the alarm still work off my fob when I unlock/lock the car, or would I have to get a separate fob for it. I'd rather not put the alarm in passive mode.
The alarm is integrated with the car. When the car is locked, 30 seconds the alarm arms if the alarm feature is enabled. No extra fob needed. All that is needed is the Toyota scan tool to turn the alarm feature on, unless the GBS is installed, in which case a wire to the driver junction box has to be removed.
