Can you post up your last emissions testing data form so we can see exactly how clean your vehicle runs?

Here are all of the pictures of the car that I have on photobucket:

This is the first time I rode in it, I was about 7, my grandfather is driving, my great grandfather (the original owner) is riding shotgun, my mother (the next owner) and I are in the back:

This is me and the car the day that I bought it from my mother and brought it home

Here's me driving it on a reliability run from Houston to Galveston and back:

Here's a picture of the engine bay that I took for my insurance company (same day I brought it home):

I was in an accident about two years ago, here's a picture of the damage:

Here's a picture of her stripped down:

When I started hanging the sheetmetal (It apparently had been hit a few times prior to my owning it, so it spent a month in the frame shop prior between stripping it down and hanging sheet metal):

I took two weeks off over Christmas break last year and did the all the prep work. Here she is coming out of the paint shop
    [IMG]

This is from the day that I moved it from 6 Volts Positive ground to 12 Volts Negative Ground

I still need to do some floor work, hang the rest of the chrome, and redo the interior. Mechanically, however, she is sound.

Do they still test for emissions through the tail pipe in California? They used to here in NY, but now they just plug into the cars computer. Basically if you don't have any lights lit on your dash the vehicle passes. Makes the yearly process MUCH faster than it used to be. So we only get a simple pass or fail, maybe Texas is like that too.

I believe certain cars are still tested through the tailpipe here in Texas. However, my car is grandfathered in on emissions in Texas. If your car was made before 1987 (I'm not exactly certain on the year, but I'm well past it) you don't have to be tested. The best I could do is show you a youtube video from the reliability run (two years ago) that shows my car running, however that is before I installed the new carb.

I'm impressed. Nice work. How do you manage to find parts?

(I wish I still had my first car, a 1966 Chevy II SuperSport. I hear they go for about 20K if they're in good condition...guess I'll never own one again!)

Oh, and welcome to Priuschat. You'll find all types here from tree-huggers to automobile collectors/restorers. Hopefully you'll find plenty of respect, and share that quality too.

And Antiprius, for whatever it's worth, if you were to compare the number of times I've ever given anyone a bad look or a rude comment/gesture based on the car/truck they are driving, to the number of times people have flipped me off or swerved at me or honked or rudely tailgated for no reason whatsoever other than I happen to drive a Prius, you'd find that the score is about 0 to 12 or more ...so please don't think all Prius owners have the same mentality as the one you originally commented on- and I won't think all other non-Prius drivers behave like the 12 or more than have acted rudely towards me. (And no, I'm not a slow or inconsiderate driver.)

That was basically my point. It pollutes despite possible good tuning. :( That could be one of the reasons why people give you angry looks. I do it all the time when someone is running a crapped out car that smells to high heaven and I'm forced to sit behind it in traffic. I don't like my clothes smelling like fumes nor do I like my lungs polluted. I won't go so far as to flip people off or yell obscenities but I do get irritated nonetheless. I was one of those people once.

It's not just about treehuggin', there are a ton of other reasons why emissions are bad. Could be that you don't drive very much so your annual emissions output are better than some people on this board or even me but other drivers don't know that.

    Nice car btw.

I was actually pretty fortunate. When I first got the car, the brake shoes were frozen to the rear drum and basically both the rear drums and the entire brake system was basically junk (it had sat for 10 years in my Mom's garage, until I convinced her to sell it). I had found a parts car out in Austin for 300 bucks, so I hauled it home, stuck it in the garage, and pulled the drums off. When the accident happened, I had most of the sheetmetal (though I think I talked to almost every junkyard in the country trying to find that bumper, and up close that one's pretty shoddy). Other than that, there are a few outfits that deal in parts for my engine, and Napa and O'Reillys still have some stuff (different variations of that motor were used in cars from the 30's to the late 50's, and then they were used in tractors).

I don't doubt you get messed with. The problem is some people buy Prius's as a political statement (which is fine) and then some of those people make unholy asses out of themselves (which is not fine). The problem is people start to associate that car with the guy who made an unholy nice person out of himself, and assume everyone who drives a prius is like that, even though most folks who own one aren't. That guy just pisses everyone off.

My first car was a 79 Bonneville, I am a little jealous of you for having that as your first car (of course, I'd also be dead if that was my first car. I was an idiot at 16).

That's a beautiful car you have there, Antiprius! Great restoration job.

The Prius is actually one of the most reliable cars on the road. The first ones are now 13 years old and still going strong.

The Volt, on the other hand, does not exist yet. Nobody knows what its emissions will be, or what mpg it will get, assuming they ever actually build it. To me it makes more sense to drive a pure EV for short trips, and a car like the Prius, optimized for emissions and FE, for road trips. The Volt is likely to have too short an EV range, and be less efficient than the Prius when burning gasoline. We won't really know until and unless they build one. Meanwhile Priuses have been available for over a decade and Zap Xebras for about five years. All while GM has been blowing hot air since killing the EV.

So saying you'd rather have a Volt than a Prius is a lot like saying you'd rather ride a unicorn than a horse.

And I apologize for saying you'd never be back after your first post. Welcome to Prius Chat. The Prius, BTW, is all about function over form. The shape is to give it a low c.d., and the innards are to make it the cleanest and most efficient gas-burning family car on the road. To the Prius enthusiast, looks just don't matter.

    Daniel,
With all due respect- I disagree. Looks DO matter to me. That's one reason why I purchased my 2010 Barcelona Red Prius IV. I think it's a great looking car- sporty lines and nice details and lines.

In light of all the recent publicly-announced screw-ups by Toyota, the most apt description for owners of 2010 Priuses should be as follows: SUCKERS. I paid $32000 for my optioned-to-the-max 2010 Series V, and i wish i had gotten a Ford or something. Signed: Toyotafool in Portland, Oregon

    John:

When I'm not driving my 2010 Prius, I can sometimes be found behind the wheel of my 1964 Early Series IIa 88" Land Rover. You know, the kind you sometimes see in vintage film of safaris in Kenya, surrounded by a menagerie of predator and prey. It has the truck cab top, external sun visor, and truck bed with a canvas cover. If you saw this old girl, next to a Prius, I believe it would raise your opinion about the beauty of the Prius at least 25%. Assuming your Plymouth is in average condition for her 60 years, I imagine that my Rover ranks about twice as ugly.

As for welding, my Rover has got an aluminum body, so it is a no starter without special gasses and less heat. In case we happen to pass on the highway before your radio is repaired, I won’t be concerned about the safety of my Golden Retriever, Cody. He generally stays securely perched in the passenger seat. Given that my Rover is British, with the driver on the right, this can cause the untrained observer to perceive that this odd relic of the past is driven by a peculiar looking person, having a mass of beautiful golden hair. If you make eye contact with Cody and he gives you a peculiar stare or, perhaps, drools in your direction, don’t be alarmed. His behavior has more to do with him and the moment, than you. Given your tendency to respond with an obscene gesture, I’ll do my best to cover Cody’s eyes. He is unaccustomed to such uncouth behavior. I hope this description helps to broaden your perception of Prius drivers. The only real difference when Cody and I drive in the Prius is that he sits on the right.

Antiprius, welcome to the board, and nice job on the Plymouth!
If you wanted to target your anger at just the people that do that type of thing, and realized that most Prius drivers are not like that, there were better ways.
First, picking a subject which seems to address all Prius owners was a poor choice.
There are idiots that drive ALL sorts of vehicles. You would have been just as accurate using 'Something I've noticed about car owners...'. Or, you could have been more accurate with something like 'A Prius driver behaved like an idiot to me today'.
As for which hybrid you would buy, if you can tell me where I can find a Volt, I would appreciate it.
In general, I like me cars not to be imaginary;)

I like gas guzzlers. I own a lot of oil stock and they it's the gas guzzlers that enable me to get my quarterly dividends. The funny thing is, they still pay me my quarterly dividends even though I always use my shareholder shares annually to vote out every board member, vote against every new amendment they recommend, and vote for every new amendment they are against.

I absolutely love that Plymouth... Sure I have a 2010 Prius, but I bought it because I hate paying for gas when commuting 60 miles or so a day...

I grew up in an auto factory town, and most students I went to school with had parents who worked for the Big Three automakers. (Not that they still are...)

If I could get a car that looked like yours and got mileage and features like mine, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I even considered getting a classic car to commute in for a while - then realized safety and fuel were too important to me.

I love my Prius, but my heart belongs to a 1967 T-bird with suicide doors.... :)

    i'm calling BS

i'm a car guy, my other "cars" are an F350 and a Kawasaki ZRX1200R

i've never given anyone sh1t for the car they drive, and i've never gotten any sh1t from anyone in a Prius

on more than one occasion, i've gotten out of my Prius to explain to a tailgater or a hater that they need to back the F#%K off or there's going to be blood
