It only took me four months to discover the hand hold to pull down the rear hatch. I had been grabbing the metal loop of the lock mechanism. I had been thinking how could Toyota overlook putting in a handle. Any other obvious discoveries I may be missing?
I'm on the phone and can't run out to the prius. Where is the handle? I've been using the metal loop some too and it's greasy, so I know I shouldn't be doing that....
It is molded into the plastic wall inside the hatch door. It is to the right of the lock loop, just feel around for it.
I just reach up and hook my fingers over the exterior sheet metal and push it down. Works just fine for me.
This is a forum for posting excerpts of news articles from the media, with links to the original sources, followed by a discussion. This is not the place for personal news of discoveries by owners who never bothered to read the owners' manual. :letitout:
Here in Phoenix, the interior grab place is relatively cool to the touch, but I have to press on someting on the exterior to fully slam the hatch. I press against the lower glass portion. It's hot but doesn't conduct heat like metal, so it's the least scorching place to press, these days!
I am glad to know that other owners also are feeling somewhat perplexed when it comes to closing the rear hatch. I cannot do it from the interior hand hold alone ... I need to "grab" onto something on the exterior ... but what? Not the spoiler, of course. So far, the raised Toyota emblem seems to be working best for me, but it is not a perfect solution. I am interested in hearing what others are doing.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Russ Yost\";p=\"107634)</div> This bothered me at first too. But a post in this group advised to grab the inverted handle located inside the hatch on the right, pull down to where you can push directly on the Toyota emblem. This leverage point makes shutting the hatch rather easy. I think it would be nice for dealers to point this out since it is not covered in the manual. Pushing directly on the emblem reverses a situation wherein the degree of difficulty is rather high to a point where it is actually pretty easy.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(HybridTeaRose\";p=\"108477)</div> I found the interior handle entirely inadequate, especially when you have one hand full. I solved the problem by installing a trunk handle from http://www.ultimatecupholders.com/trunkhandle.html My 5’2†wife can reach this handle easily and it keeps you from scratching the paint around the emblem. Here a couple of views of the handle as received and after installation. http://priuschat.com/forums/album_showpage....php?pic_id=360 http://priuschat.com/forums/album_showpage....php?pic_id=361
Nice pictures, but if you place the palm of your hand directly on the emblem it will be a better method to actually close the hatch. And there will be no scratch marks. It appears that is the exact pressure point needed for the job.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Fredatgolf\";p=\"108513)</div> Better depends on your height! If you are not tall enough to see the emblem, the handle is a full 6 inches closer and gives you enough leverage to completely close the hatch using only one hand. To each his own I guess.
 -SIGH- What do many Prius owners have against reading the Manual? Page 40 of the "2004 Owner's Manual" has a drawing and explanation of the "inside handle."
I'm with you Charles. I read mine the day we brought home the car and found it to be very easy reading. I don't know why people refuse to read it. I find it exciting. Agile
I glanced over the manual. We had a pretty good once over at the dealer, but who's really listening then? I was too geeked up about getting the car. The only thing I really read in depth was the DVD NAV. Of course, with a 4,000 mile trip from the dealer to home, there was plenty of time to experiment. Discovering little surprises like the inside handle (which I found only a month ago) make life much more enjoyable. It'll drive you type-A owners nuts, but I had the car for 3 weeks before I discovered you could lock it with the black button on the outside handles I'd been using the FOB exclusively!
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Charles Suitt\";p=\"108546)</div> That's only useful if you know that there is a handle inside, or happen to run across it when reading cover-to-cover. I, for one, had no idea that there was such a thing. I haven't looked up the phaser array, either, or the transporter pad. Thanks to the original poster for sharing this tip! I will check it out right away.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(priusham\";p=\"108590)</div> I've just got to ask... Did you not see the little black button and wonder what it might be for? I can only assume that your Prius is black, because that's the only way I can imagine that someone would not see the button and push it to find out what it does.

seasalsa: I am not talking about pulling it down with the emblem, pull it down with your new handle or the inside handle or whatever. But no matter how short one is, the emblem is what you push on to close the hatch and you only touch it when it is almost closed, about chin high for a short person. I am sorry to keep coming back on this but it apparently wasn't clear. Other posters were having trouble after they had pulled the hatch into position before closing it. They were using the glass or the hot metal. If, for instance, you push on the spoiler, it sounds like it is cracking on most Prii.
