Smart Key Question (Unlock All Doors)

Yes, you can change the behavior yourself. Page 48 of the manual describes the process. Basically you just hold down the lock and unlock buttons on the remote for 5 seconds while the car is off. That toggles between driver-only and all-doors modes.

 

What if I want to open the passenger door from the passenger side to let my aging mother in, or the rear hood from the rear when wanting to deposit groceries. I can do this in my 2004, why not my 2010. Can the dealer reprogram that while they reprogram my brakes.

 

If I remember correctly, only the IV and V have sensor hardware on those doors. On the II and III you need to push the button on the remote or touch the driver's door.

 

How come --- on the 2004 the base model has sensors on passenger and rear doors as well. Why did Toyota get rid of them (and effectively bury the change in very small type). Are these the same guys who hid the brake problem?

My fuzzy memory and other people's accounts on this forum suggest otherwise. Thus I searched the internet and found a page on the IntelliChoice website listing the various option packages on the 2004 Prius. The lowest package offering the smart key system was package #4, at a retail of $1100 above the base.

(I'd list the website link, but the forums don't trust me and won't let me post a link. Just search for "intellichoice 2004 prius optional packages" to find it.)

 

No, this is not correct. The base model 2004 Prius did not have SKS. In other words, none of the doors had sensors.

Only the higher package Gen II Prius had SKS, but it was the full three door SKS.

With the Gen III, Toyota decided to include SKS on all packages. The lower package levels now have a single door SKS system, while the upper packages retain the full three door system.

Sorry to bring this from the dead.... if I understand correctly, your telling me that my prius programming can be changed if I hold down two buttons for 5 seconds.

I have a prius III. I want all doors to open when I touch the driver door.

Does that make sense?

You're correct. Try it to see: each time you do the two button push it will switch, and the dash shows, I think with a car-with-doors pic.

On that note..... what is a reasonable charge for programming? I have solar... I am assuming the got me set up with the same key and programmed for that as well.

 

So they could charge you more for giving them to you.

Thank you Mendel. I just left my dealership where the Prius specialist played with it for an hour (last call on a Friday afternoon), unsuccessfully looking for the solution. I was not charged, and asked to come back next week after he checks the computer. I came home, found your post and did it myself in 10 seconds.

When the car was new, I had it done by the dealer, and it took 5 minutes for that and to deprogram the annoying backup beeper. Somehow, recently, the door sensor got deprogrammed (I never use the key fob--maybe I sat on it?), so I went back. I feel bad for the guy that I'll call on Monday to tell him how it's done! And grateful to you for posting that tidbit.

You got me looking to recall where I found that, in case I forgot, needed to redo:

It's on page 48 of the Owners Manual (at least in my pdf version), in section "1-2 Key Information", titled "Switching the door unlock function".

 

I just tested the all unlock feature and it works fine with the KARR alarm. Also using inside door lock button, Driver side Power Door Lock doesn't affect anything, so maybe 2012 models are fine? Oh, yeah I have 2012 priusIII. That would have been very bad if you can't use Power Door Lock, WTH? So right now when I press start, all doors are automaticall locked. Or do I have the correct test steps?

Does anyone know if this procedure still works on a 2014 Prius?
The instructions listed above do not appear in the new manual and the "Customization" section says only the dealer can change it, which I assume means we have to track down the OBD programming info to do it ourselves.

Despite these instructions not being in the manual and the "Customization" section stating only the dealer can make this change, the procedure above does work on my 2014 Prius v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon) Two.
