Agreed. Selling it private for an extra $1000 will probably net you a loss.

The amount subject to sales tax is the price of the new car less the price of the trade. If the dealer gives $30000 for the Prius & you buy a new car for $30000 there is 0 sales tax. If you sell the Prius privately for $31000 and buy a new car for $30000 you will owe sales tax on the $30000.

 

Jim, you are in NJ & the seller is in TX. State Sales Tax rules differ from state to state. For example Montana? No sales tax. CA? You buy a new car, trade in for another new car, you pay sales tax on the full value of the 2nd car ... or the 3rd or 4th ... as often as you buy cars (unless you get a resell license from the board of equalization) ... whether your subsequent car purchases are new or used. How they do it in TX may or may not be different.

that's exactly the way Texas sales tax is....just did it in Nov.

 

What are you trading in and getting? If you can get $30,000, I would dump it right away. I am sure you are getting a great deal on the new car since everybody is discounting and selling less than invoice nowadays.
