Information for nav/audio upgrade

    I am going to do a phased upgrade of my head unit/speakers and installation of a backup camera and amplifier.

    Next weekend I am going to install the head unit

    I have
    pioneer avic z110bt Head unit with nav & blue tooth
    metra 70-1761 toyota radio wiring harness

    And am going to order the

    scosche TA2105B dash kit (from sonic electronics unless I should get it from another vendor)

    I am going to put off getting the steering wheel interface until later. I want the ASWC, since I am likely to replace the head unit again before I sell the car, but I want someone with a Prius to try one first.

    From a wiring perspective I am unsure of where to tap the speed and reverse sensors. The European document has the speed sensor on pin 3 of a 20 pin connector, and reverse on pin 29 of a 64 pin connector. Are these correct for our us cars, and if so where are the connectors located.

    I would like to put the usb and aux av plug in the center console. Is there a socket that is standard toyota to replace the current aux socket I have in there now?

    I am planning to put the mike on the top of the steering column and gps antena just on top of the stereo. Are there better locations?

    The other pieces for phase one are back up camera and subwoofer. I am thinking of getting

    but would like to get one that fits the oem camera location. Can I go this cheap, and are there better choices.

    I am thinking of the basslink for my subwoofer, but don't know if it will be good enough. I am not ready to spend the money on a custom subwoofer. Will one of the shallow 10 or 12 inch subs that I can put above the spare sound as good as better?

    phase II will be changing out the speakers and possibly soundproofing 2 or 4 of the doors. I want to hear how the system sounds with just the head unit and sub first.

    Great choice on the HU Can't help on the speed sensor as the JVC does not use it. I have my reverse signal grounded out to allow passenger axcess to the NAV and other goodies. I have the Basslink and will install this weekend. I got the chepo camera from Amazon and works great. Good luck with your install and don't forget pics.

    Thanks I'll take lots of photo's and post them.

    I will be grounding the parking brake input as you did so that functions aren't locked to the passengers. I bet you hooked up something for the reverse sensor for your reverse camera to come on automatically. The nav will work fine without the speed sensor, but it uses it for dead reckoning when it the satellites are blocked. Hopefully I can find the right wires when I get the panels off this weekend.

    Thats a damm good deal on the scosche kit. I paid $29.00 plus tax and shipping for mine from scosche. My reverse camera is on and off via the moonitor power switch
    no need to be in reverse.

    Yes, for cars without JBL the speed wire is pin 3 on the 20 pin harness. I'm not 100% sure about the reverse wire. I'll find out when my parts arrive sometime next week.

    There is a way to bypass the Z110BT, just do a simple search on the net. You don't have to hook up the parking brake wire and a passenger can access the navigation functions when the car is moving.

    I did part of my install today. The scosche kit looks good (though a little different than the dash) and was easy to put in. The car is really put together like tinker toys, things just nap out and back in (I'm not complaining).

    I had one problem, There are very small pins in the pioneer connector, and I need to move one for the parking brake overide. I can't seem to get it out.

    Everyting else was straight forward. I have not installed the back up camera or sub yet, but everything else is working fine. I will post pics later.

    Did you connect the reverse wire as per the European instructions? Did it work for you?

    I got caught up with other things so I didn't disassemble my dash today.

    I have hooked up the Head unit and subwoofer. I could not pull the wire from the connector to hook up the backup overide. I am sure I can get help with that soon. Installation was easy. I just put the gps antenae on top of the unit as ABL showed us and it gets good reception. The mic is taped above the steering wheel. The wire goes through easily and connects up the back. I ran the usb into the glove box since that was easiest. I want to get a proper socket and put it in the console. Standard toyota cables connected to the pioneer, other than parking brake (and I still need to do the hack), speed wire which requires exposing a wire in the 20 pin connector.

    I have not hooked up the reverse wire yet. I will as soon as I get a camera. Those at the store were cmos and I think I want to get a ccd. It may take awhile to install since I have a marathon to run next sunday.

    On initial impressions I like the scoosche dash kit. It seems to blend well and was easy to install. I still need to open it up and adjust the brackets to be absolutely flush. It does not match the texture, but The kit and head unit give the dash a nicer look then the stock head unit.

    I haven't taken much time to play with all the functions. The moving map is nice. The voice recognition is really good. Music start up has a slight delay but it seems less than 5 seconds. ipod control is really good. Sound is much improved. ipod voice recognition sucks, not because it does not work, but because it takes a long time to read all the songs. I'm turning that off for now.

    Followed the instructions at AVIC411's forum and got the mute wire out. You need to use a very small screwdriver to lift up the plastic cover on top of the harness (you also need to push a bit on the square tab on the side of the harness to lift it up). You don't need to lift it all the way up, just loosen it is enough.

    In the front of the harness, there are two sets of holes (and two rows of them), the bigger holes are for the connections themselves. Find the corresponding pin for the mute wire. Insert a small pin (like the ones used for sewing) into the small hole above it and push down (towards the big hole). Gently pull the mute wire out.

    Continue to follow the bypass instructions and re-insert the pin into the correct place. Push the plastic cover down.

    I am getting ready to do the same setup. Quick question:

    Did you put in a Pac-SWI-PS (pretty sure you did) and did that retain your bluetooth steering wheel controls ? I have a hang up, pick up and voice dial button on my steering wheel (toyota prius 3 with non nav jbl system).

    I am shooting for this setup because it is one of the two receivers that can retain that button (the voice dial button).

    I didn't but others have. You need to make sure its version 1.6.8 or later. I have a model II so no blue tooth buttons on my steering wheel. I didn't hook up the pac and I'm not sure I will. The touch screen just seems easier than the steering controls, but I would have done it if I had the call buttons on the steering wheel. If you haven't bought the z110bt yet make sure you do it from an authorized retailer as there is a $200 rebate. I bought it from 6ave through the amazon site for $919.

    On removing the mute wire, my connector doesn't have the same release tab. I'm sure someone that is better with a needle than me can do it in the next couple of days.

    $919 is a very good price. I couldn't find z110bt from 6ave on Amazon for decent price when I was looking a couple of weeks ago. Anyway, I go cheap and bought a x910bt for $570 from 6ave through Amazon. I'll be sending in $100 rebate so it'll be $470. I'm just getting ready for install this or next weekend.
    I think there is a s/w override also. I don't have the link handy from avic411. I'll be also doing the nav s/w hack/upgrade from avic411.

    The prices vary, and I waited about a week for one of the authorized retailers to have a good price. They can't post the great prices on their own sites because pioneer will get mad. Cartoys (make sure its the right one) and electronic express are the other authorized sellers. You need to go authorized for your warranty and rebate.

    I'll try the razor blade trick tonight. The speach recognition is really good on the nav.

    leeb18c that's a great price. I spent an extra $80 for the MSDN to get traffic and you have it built in. My unit doesn't have a software hack to get rid of the nannyware warnings but yours does.

    The avic-x920bt is about to come out too (announced at CES) and that is the other receiver that is suppose to allow voice control through the steering wheel control.

    Oh, I didn't know the hack is different. I don't think I'll get the MSN sub. Isn't it ending in 2012?

    I saw the announcement but it'll be expensive and there'll be a lot of bugs with initial release as usual. I may go z110bt or kenwood dnx9140 if I catch them at good price but x910bt would do for now. :)

    Hey, can you confirm the speed sensor is on pin 3 of a 20 pin connector, and reverse on pin 29 of a 64 pin connector? How about illumation wire? I'm going to put my HU this weekend. Thanks.

    To follow up on my own question, the vss is on pin 3 of 20pin connector from stock HU and the backup wire is pin 29 or 64 pin connector behind the driver side kick panel.

    Sorry I wasn't on prius chat last weekend. It looks like you got the information you needed. Pin 3 on the 20 pin connector is the speed wire of the Model II. I will be installing my reverse camera this week or the coming weekend. I'll take some photos of routing and confirm pin 29 of the 64pin connector. It seems green curry expert and you both found this works.

    I used a slightly different method to hook up the parking brake defeat. I just had to thin a wire, and placed it in the socket next to the mute wire. I then used electrical tape to keep the wire in place. All I had to do then was to attach this wire and the parking brake wire to ground. I failed at using a needle or staple (just couldn't do this right), and this was easier than cutting the plastic with a rasor blade. The bypass allows the passenger to operate some functions while moving, that could not be used otherwise.
