Smart Key Unlocking Question, Driver Side V.S. Passenger Side

Yeah the key to the directions is hold down the lock button and panic button at the SAME time or else your neighbors will be very angry with you. Practice with it...It took me a few trys.

Pressing the "unlock" button on your remote unlocks the driver's door. Pressing a second time within a short time span unlocks the rest of the doors.

 

The SKS on our Prius has prompted me to develop a new sort of chivalry with car doors. On occasion, as needed, I walk over and stand next to my wife so that she can open her car door or the hatch, since I always have my fob and she seldom has hers. I look at it as a form of proximity chivalry.

Just changed mine to open doors on my 2008. Man that was easy. Push and hold lock and panic until the car beeps ?four? times and it was done. If I ever find myself on the wrong side of the tracks it will be just as fast to change back.

If you've got kids just do it.

 

As to the 'why' part of the question, it is actually a safety feature.
So someone else nearby cant jump in quick when you open all the doors.
Rather than changing the default setting, my wife and I each carry one of the key fobs

 

I just successfully changed my 2005 Prius. The manual is poorly written I feel. It did take a few times but it finally worked. The car alarm (panic) kept going off. I am glad to have it finally changed. Thanks to this group/site.

If you're walking up to your car, on a dark night in a scary place, you probably do NOT want the passenger doors opening when you open the driver's side door. Someone could jump in there with you. The default setting is for security.
