The braking issue I had with my 2010 Prius might have been because of any icy intersection, but I don't recall any bumps that set it off. I wrote about the entire brake malfunction incident today here in case you are interested. If I should copy and paste it to this thread just let me know. Thanks. Jeff
Fresh from the oven... With Prius, a Second Blow to Toyota’s Reputation - NYTimes.com I thought it was a good article as it summarizes the problem here and in Japan and it compares the reg brakes of the Prius against the Insight. In the comments, some Prius onwers are saying gen 2 has bad brakes too...
It's brakes, not breaks. Sorry, but with all the Toyota and Prius bashing going on, if I'm forced to read through it, I want to read through it all with proper spelling. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_difference_between_brake_and_break
Re: Would you still have bought a Prius if you knew about brake issues? Well there are sooo many posts that I don't read unless I have a question about. I would just trust that a car is made well. But I guess this proves me wrong. I should never have gotten a car at all. I should have just biked everywhere. Less trouble. Or walked everywhere since I live in the city, but thought the commute to work in the burbs would be more pleasant with a gas saving Prius. Except it's NOT that much better than a camry at all.
Sorry, it was a typo... you got the idea, don't you? http://www.answers.com/topic/typographical-error
It was a typo I have seen used several time in various posts by both you and other users, that's the only reason I pointed it out. So now we've both got the idea...
My sympathies. You made a terrible mistake for which you are going to pay pay and pay. You never stop paying for some mistakes - especially since you chose a car that is so incompatible with what you really want. Were you drunk when you bought it? On the other hand the people on this chat group, by luck, experience, or superior intelligence, chose a car that suited them. It will be difficult to get them to agree with you. We all agree that you made a terrible dumb illogical choice that you have to live with for a long time. Looking at that car every morning, a car that you can't get rid of, must make your blood boil with rage. And then you look for people to support you and you get no support except for the general agreement that it was a bad stupid choice on your part. A day when your faculties left you. You are smarter now. You won't repeat the mistake anymore. Everyone makes mistakes. Move on. Why come back for more? And your credibly is low because you are concerned about a few thousand dollars of resell value when you squandered over 20K in bad judgment. How can we trust your current judgment? Maybe this new diesel car is just as bad - you just don't realize it yet. It won't be your first time of making big mistakes. Get a new car, take the financial loss, and get on with your life. Or spend the next few years being bitter, misunderstood, and annoyed in this chat group. There are probably some chat groups about other cars where people will have more sympathy.
Re: Toyota warns of possible brake problems in 2010 Prius Out of curiousity what if Toyota never denies the problem just refuses to ever recognize it? Plus also out of curiousity do you feel the sensation is problematic enough to warrant a solution being sought and implemented?
See, I try... but people somehow are bothered by the fact I don't like my Prius, more so than I am bothered with my Prius myself! I already told this... there is no rage running in my blood or torture when I ride it... Hello? Do you feel like that about any material things you don't like? If yes, you may need professional help, sorry. It's just a bloody car, just like my cell phone, my mug, my pen... I have more respect for my plants giving a little green feeling to my office than to any car I have ever owned. Some people are just so attached to material stuff... so weird... this whole country went into recession because people made terrible compromises to material stuff they could not afford... get a life dude....
Excuse me Mr. glass house....You are the one spending ALL day here at a Prius fan site, with the mission of COMPLAINING. And not only complaining...but recruiting others to complain. Either you need to get a life as well...or you are simply getting paid to be here.
Just for the record, I'm not bothered by the fact that Indyking doesn't like his Prius. I think he has the freedom to not like his Prius. He's been consistent...that counts. I don't like Crab, I don't care how good people tell me it is, I think they are nothing but giant saltwater sea spiders, and I hate spiders. So I'm never eating crab. I assume Indyking will someday be Priusless. That doesn't bother me, if it doesn't bother him.
Re: Would you still have bought a Prius if you knew about brake issues? Absolutely Tom; a reflection of the old media mantra: "If it bleeds, it leads"
I am not bothered - I care about you. I could have used a gentler tone but I did not say anything you did not say yourself. You said you made a bad choice and I agreed. You said you are very unhappy. I know you are very unhappy. You said the your choice was unwise - I agreed. In your view the Prius is a bad car. I agree it is a bad car for you. All the facts have been laid out and discussed. You succeeded. We all agree that the Prius is a bad car for you - you have your own criteria which I totally respect. Or maybe I can even presume that all of us totally respect. Out of total respect for you, we are keeping prices high by not trading in our Prius and continuing to buy the car. Keeping the demand up so you can get the best value when you decide to trade in. So you see, you won and you are respected not only by words but by deeds (i.e., we are keeping the Prius so you can get a good price). Be happy. Now please put your money where your mouth is. Trade in that Prius. Otherwise, I will assume you are secretly in love with it. You complain about it but just can't part with the love of your life.
Re: Toyota warns of possible brake problems in 2010 Prius The point of my post was to invite those interested to experiment in a controlled situation, not a panic stop.
I have experienced this problem in my 2010 Prius as well as every other car that I have owned with anti-lock brakes.
Re: Toyota warns of possible brake problems in 2010 Prius I can't comment on why Toyota designed it this way but I've rented several Prius's and I own a 2007. All the ones I have driven do this. Usually the VSC light flashes mometarily on the dash also. It's the regen braking going off and I don't worry about it in the least. I just push the pedal harder and the car stops. It's hardly noticeable although the first time it happened it felt funny. You need to find a decent bump and brake while crossing the bump. As soon as one wheel slides, the VSC and ABS lights come on and you have lost regen braking. Only an issue if your pads are also wet, which does happen to me in the winter around here. I do not think it warrants any serious safety concern but that is my opinion only.
Isn't absence of truth or any statement when there is knowledge of a problem almost as bad as denying? I think if I know the sensation is going to occur, I can compensate. To the new Prius driver, I don't think that's the case. The Brake ECU logic should be revised to engage some friction braking if regen is going to be cut due to an irregular wheel speed change (something that would trigger ABS). The point of ABS isn't to reduce braking force on all wheels, but only the wheel(s) that have lost traction. I think we've suggested that because the Gen III uses a reduction gear on MG2, and because the Gen III has more effective regen at lower speeds, the "problem" as designed is more noticeable and thus, more alarming.
