 "To each his own..." Statistics just published indicate that drivers using cellphones while driving are FOUR TIMES more likely to become involved in an accident. Is not programming the NAV system a similar risk? I believe Toyota had this risk in mind when making the decision to disable programming the NAV system while the Prius is in motion. I feel the same way about the Reverse BEEP - since the display is the only other way to indicate that you are in reverse.

Of course, those who chat on a cellphone while driving (?? or program their NAV while driving...) have the mindset "I'm more careful than THAT! It won't happen to ME!"

I sure hope I won't be in your path when you're inputting a Destination or focused on your NAV system rather than watching the road and traffic... I'd rather not have my Prius and my body crunched.

All I can say is what I've said before, if you feel you can't do both, don't do them - which would be a very wise way to look at the situation. However, if you can't do it, don't presume others can't.
For example, I've flown quite a few thousand hours in my life and the work load during instrument situations and or landing/takeoff is humongous. (Much, much more than driving and talking or programming the GPS)I can handle it, some can't and some can handle twice what I can. Same goes for GPS and Cell. Obviously, those who were part of the statistics you mentioned couldn't handle the load. What can I say?
I'm just sick of people preaching about their own limitations with the assumption we all have them.
And, of course, no offense intended.

I think you're right, I'm sure there are other similar screens and probably hidden somewhere in there is a similar set of keystrokes to override the BT and probably other handy stuff.

But, there was at least one case where someone on one of the tech forums got into a serious mess, converted to an all Japanese character screen, couldn't remember his keystrokes and ended up creating some sort of pretty serious problem for himself that was not easy to remedy.

I'm not saying 'don't experiment'. But I am saying be very careful. write out each step you are going to try before you actually try it and if you deviate make an annotation to that effect so that the problem can be retraced and hopefully corrected.

That would seem so, but isn't. There are many who "feel [they] can do both", but in reality they can't. That said, saying 'be careful' is unlikely to be effective with that group b/c they hear it and think "oh, that doesn't apply to me".

I hear your point, but I think little harm is done by repeated warnings. It is very easy to become distracted and often you're not even aware of how long one's attention has been off the road until you look up and see you're in another lane.

I have to say that I've had the same types of thoughts that in the flying business one has many more demands on one's time. And thus those folks are well suited for multi-tasking while driving. But not everyone is and the warnings are of no harm.

There is not, at all, anything "Orwellian" about reminding people to be careful. There is no intrusion and we exact no control...making people aware of something they may not otherwise be aware of is good stewardship to society. Be that about driving without distraction, using seat belts and car seats for children, or driving an environmentally responsible car.

I really can't totally disagree with you, however I do have one small exception. The Orwellian aspect is very much there with massive intrusion existant on a personal level. However, we're really off topic and I apologise for continuing. If you'd like to continue this by direct email I'd be tickled to do so.

I had not thought of that! I did that to my cell phone once everthing was in Japanese characters. Had to take it in to get it reset. Very good point.

Any studies on how dangerous it is for a passenger to use the NAV while in motion? I think the risk is low.

Maybe we could commission such a study. The results would certainly be meaningful and pertinent to this discussion.

Where do you draw the line?

For me the annoying thing about the MFD with navigation is the inconsistency of it. As has been mentioned before there is SO much information that the user can toggle through, and so many buttons that are enabled while the car is in motion, that preventing the user from, for example, touching a phone # to dial out, or touching a previously stored destination, seems ridiculous.
Last night I was playing with the audio controls and noticed the MSG button while viewing the station presets screen for the radio. I noticed one of the stations was capable of broadcasting messages, so while in motion I touched the MSG button. The text basically said 'Messages are not displayed while the vehicle is in motion to avoid distracting the driver'. THAT'S A FRICKING MESSAGE! Crazy.
How many of us have stared at the Instantaneous Consumption Information screen too long while driving, trying to stop the MG or ICE from kicking in? Isn't it there to be used while driving? Toyota should have totally disabled the MFD while the car is in motion if they want to avoid lawsuits...

On a slightly different note, I agree with the previous poster who said that if hands-free cellphones are a distraction then talking, period, is a distraction, and therefore talking in moving vehicles should be banned if hands-free cellphone usage is considered dangerous. Frankly talking on a cellphone is less 'immersive' and distracting than talking to somebody in the seat next to you.

[font=Comic Sans MS:37f4239aaf]You mean I can't talk to myself in the car or sing along with the radio (which might look a lot like talking)? Maybe the Glass Breakage Sensor could be modified and hooked in with nav and Bluetooth to call the cops if there's any talking in a Prius.

Or maybe we'll all learn to be ventrilquists so our mouths won't move when we're talking.

There was a recent story on CNN that actually looked at talking and the frequency of accidents in a car amongst new teen drivers.

First they tested them on a computer without distractions. Then they brought in a couple of friends who just chatted, joked, and pointed...the result was lots of crashes and much more distractions.

In any case, this very nice thread on a neat newly discovered function is sure far OT.

Deduct one point for misusing the term "Orwellian." As for the kind of society we live in, a casual drive on the freeways of California (and Virginia, as I noticed last month) reveals that we are a society of fools who are more interested in our own convenience than we are in the safety of others who might be in our path. People do all sorts of stupid things while driving (eat, read, put on makeup, shave, talk on the phone, etc.). Typing addresses into the Nav system can be highly distracting, and a word of warning to the foolish is warranted.

Okay, not Orwellian. And I do NOT wish to inaccurately call it "Darwinian," as I don't fully understand either concept. (Rather cool to get an adjective named after you, though.)

Yet there is an uncomfortable subtext in the constant reminder to "Be careful." Are we in fact more endangered than we realize, or is this some legal placeholder? A similar subtext was used in the film THX1138 (early George Lucas). All I recall of that film now is the support staff answering the phones with, "What's wrong?"

Back on topic, I was wondering if the Error Log contained anything interesting, or would messing with it confuse your OBD II system.

Works great and the steps are rather easy to remember too. I took a friend out to lunch today and all he did was fool around with the nav trying to find all sorts of stuff. (although the POI didn't pick out Charlestown Races and Slots when he punched in Casino  )

    Thanks!

I agree, it works great on my April, 2004 Prius. Perfect for when you are in stop and go traffic on the freeway and you want to program an alternate route. Car is never stopped long enough to get the destination entered and there is no way to pull off to a safe place for a longer stop.

    Absolutely indispensable!!!

I wish I could find a similar shortcut for my 2002 Lexus ES300. It does not work on it.
