I'm generally pleased -- so far -- with my 2010 Prius IV. BUT I'm displeased with Toyota corporate's attitude towards customer service re the unintended acceleration. Their behavior is classic what-not-to-do when you have a crisis of credibility: Deny everything at first, forced to recant, forced to do a recall and forced to apologize.

This pattern of deceit and lying makes one wonder whether the problem is more widespread than the models recalled. After all, Toyota has many, many common parts across all its models. Also you wonder whether the source of unintended acceleration is really the gas pedal wearing out -- or something much more dangerous, such as the software in the chips controlling acceleration and braking. In addition, Prius fans, you may breathe a sigh of relief not being on the recall, but note that Lexus isn't either. And it was that Lexus that the unintended acceleration which killed the family in San Diego. Note the explanation there was the floor mats versus the worn accelerator. Really?!

Many of you may recall unintended acceleration in the Audi. It nearly killed the brand until many years later.

Call the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 800-331-4331 and express your concerns.

I don't feel Toyota has been deceitful at all in any of this. The Lexus incident and this current recall are two totally different things. I do not feel it is a conspiracy and they are intentionally not relating the two incidents.

People are bashing Toyota for the actions they took making this recall. Imagine had they not and tried to really cover this up. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

How do you know? Did you look at the vehicle involved and determined that for yourself?

How do you know that they are lying or covering something up? It is my opinion that they are unrelated situations. I am not a conspiracy theorist.

I'm no safety expert, didn't look at the Lexus, and don't plan to research further but...my old person memory tells me that news reports I read were that the dealership (probably a lot boy) placed a floor mat over an installed mat and did not attach that mat...thus causing the loose mat to slide forward and lodge under the gas pedal. It was a horrible incident and a warning to all of us to be alert to the consequences of such simple actions.
I'm not going to argue your feelings, which you are entitled to, about Toyota's actions but personally, I believe they acted responsibly and in a timely manner at great financial cost to the corporation as well as to their solid reputation...I'm so very sorry the pedal manufacturer was a USA company. We do not need that when we're trying to save our jobs.

LOL. Really. You have 17 posts, and EVERY one of them is a complaint about something. Every one.

Sorry, but not buying what you're selling. Nice try.

You do know that Prius is NOT part of this recall/investigation? More conspiracy theories? LOL.

Why are you "displeased" with Toyota's handling of the "acceleration" issues on other Toyota vehicles, including the Lexus? To my knowledge, they haven't "denied" anything. What they have done, is exactly what they should do - try to separate out facts fromn fiction, and real claims from those that are false, or have nothing to do with this issue. They did, after all, stop production on several top selling models...an action that (to my knowledge) has never been done before. They were required by law to stop the sales of those models affected by the recalls, but they were under no legal requirment to stop production...which, if you know anything about cars, stopping production in the middle of the year is a HUGE thing.

    Bull.

What "lying" have they done? Please provide examples, with links? This is beginning to sound more like Fox News! Factual information, please? Give Rush Limbaugh a call, and maybe he can give you some made up facts. LMAO.

Complicated problem(s) that may, or may not be related... investigations require due dillegence and careful analysis. Maybe that's something you should practice in your own life, before you "rush to judgement".

LOL. I had the Audi 5000 that was part of this scandal. I lived this. If you are saying that Toyota is handling the situation much like Audi did, then you know nothing/jacksquat. Audi almost from the get-go, pointed the finger directly right back on the American driver, and said, "there is no engineering problem here, the problem is with ther drivers". That's where the term "driver error" came from. It almost killed the Audi brand because they tried to shift the blame to idiot American drivers who couldn't differentiate between the gas and brake peddles. Read some of the German press before you try to make this comparison. Toyota is not blaming the American driver. To most Japanese, personal and corporate honor (or disgrace) are big deals to them. Different culture in japan.

I personally think Toyota is to be commended in the job they are doing addressing this problem. The public is just rediculus anymore in what they expect and how quickly they expect resolution. It takes time to investigate this type of problem and how to fix it. four million new gas peddles, yea sure just whip them out overnight sure.

No other car company i to the best of my knowledge has made such a sweeping decision as to stop production of 8 product lines. And yes it does make sense to restart the production plants first.

I would bet Toyota will have the plans detailed to fix the existing peddles by the end of next week. if they can fix the existing peddles instead of replacing all of them it makes the most sense to do that instead of replacing them. Replacing all of them would take much longer to implement as it would require the fabricate 4 million new peddles. Yes i am sure cost is also a consideration, but i bet timing is paramount in their decision as well. They need to get this done now, their reputation is going down hill at an accelerated pace the longer it takes. Especially in todays world with instant communications and media over kill beating an issue relentlessly.

I owned an Audi, at the time of their problems. FYI just take a look and watch the Kelly Blue Book value on your Toyota and watch it drop like a rock every time the networks come on talking about it.

I just cant get over how people are so used to going to the drive thru for their big mack that they seem to think something like this should work (be fixed almost overnight) the same way.

In the interim its a feeding frenzy for the media, and the uninformed public just keep it going and making their contribution to making it worse too. it the mass hysteria effect like yelling fire i a theater. When in reality you probably stand a better chance of getting hit by a car then having the acceleration happen to you in your Toyota.

What comes out of the comments makes me conclude that this site is either populated by Toyota shill dealers who depend on the problem free myth to make their meal ticket or by nitwit fans who prefer to "see no evil, hear, no evil."

In essence, this Priuschat is totally useless as a source of reasonable discourse or information.

I don't work for Toyota, but I am a professional manufacturing engineer with over 30 years experience and i know how things work. A little common sense on matters like this goes a long way, problem is many people today don't seem to have it.

Lets recap: No Prius is involved in the 'sticking pedal made in America' recall, 8 other Toyota models are.

There is also a recall for 'floormat/length of pedal' which does involve some Prius, as well as other Toyotas.

(As a programmer, I sympathize with having two bugs both causing similar behavior)

You prefer to suspect Toyota of planning to damage their own reputation in a desire to kill American drivers, (similar to Ford deciding not to redesign the Pinto) others feel some workers at Toyota made design mistakes which are being discovered when studied.

You are amazed we choose not to support your opinion without documentation.

    Do I have this right?

My take on this is that Toyota has acted in good faith. As far as we know, we only have one problem with the Prius accelerator, which is interference with some of the floor mats.

This is being confused and compounded by Toyota's other recall regarding the accelerator mechanism. This involves other Toyota models, not the Prius.

Oh, please. Give us all a break. Really.

You come on here like it's Fox News with claims of Toyota "lying", "cover ups" and "deceit"...yet have zero facts or unbiased information. What we do know for fact is - of your 18 posts regarding Prius/Toyota, every single one of them (going back to july 2009) has been negative/critical. Unhappy with your car choice? That's fine - then suggest you sell it. But trying to flame the fire without a shred of factual information is, well, akin to what Fox News does.

Try coming back when you have something more than conspiracy theories.

As a relatively new Prius owner I personally find a lot to like about the car. As this is my first Toyota I am saddened by the companies troubles but as I have Owned or Leased 7+ cars over the years I have come to know how difficult it is to reach anyone in Corporate.

The dealership is the only direct interface most of us mortals have with their brand. I happen to like mine right now. I understand why manufacturer's insist the dealers act as a communication filter with the customer...I get it. Sometimes though it can be frustrating.

I personally never try to contact the manufacturer directly...I make the dealership do it if I have an issue that I think really needs to be resolved. If the dealership does not act...I switch dealerships (as I did with Ford when I owned a lemon Taurus in '89).

Your post is full of misinformation. No wonder you're dissatisfied. If you tried complaining to someone somewhere you may as well have been speaking Urdu. You said that your Prius is not involved, so where is the issue?

What a bunch of malarkey. I have never worked for Toyota nor any car dealership. I've personally met a # of Priuschat regulars and they don't work for Toyota either. Even some of the biggest Toyota/Prius enthusiasts and most knowledgable folks on here will admit Toyota isn't perfect and have had some issues of their own. (Example: I've met Patrick Wong. He's one of our resident experts yet he's mentioned that in his three Toyota hybrids, he's had two HV batteries replaced under warranty, see http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-ii-...ry-replaced-before-60k-miles.html#post1035023.)

I've learned a LOT of valuable information here and appreciate the enthusiasm, thirst for learning and experimentation shown by some members. One other hybrid site I know has little in the way of that. It has little information and lots of useless posts and questions posted by people who seem to have little car knowledge and post vague questions and complaints w/scant or no details.

From glancing at your posts, you're looking more a like a troll to me. If you're unhappy w/your Prius and you can't find a dealer to remedy your problems (intermittent ones are always the toughest, you might want to have video documentation), then sell your Prius and troll somewhere else.

Oh really? from Jan Wall Street Journal:
In recent months, there have been signs of tension between NHTSA and Toyota officials. On Nov. 4, the agency issued an unusual rebuke of Toyota, saying the company released misleading information about a plan to recall some 3.8 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles to fix floor mats that the company said could interfere with the gas pedal and cause the vehicles to speed up even after the driver lifted his foot.

In its release, Toyota said NHTSA had found no defect in vehicles with properly installed floor mats, and added: "This is the sixth time in the past six years that NHTSA has undertaken such an exhaustive review of allegations of unintended acceleration on Toyota and Lexus vehicles and the sixth time the agency has found no vehicle-based cause for the unwanted acceleration allegations."

Two days later NHTSA said Toyota's statement that NHTSA had concluded no defect existed was "misleading and inaccurate," and that the matter wasn't resolved.
