I had a cop give me a fix it ticket one time. I never went back to re-install the tint as I didn't want to deal with another ticket.

Technically, tinting the front side windows is legal in CA as long as you stay over 70%. Whether you find a film light enough to be combined with the Prius' already-tinted glass to stay legal is another matter, as garygid said.

Technically, tinting the front side windows is articulated in the CA vehicle code here, in the 1st paragraph:
    VEHICLE CODE 26708. (a) (1)

V.C. Section 26708 - Material Obstructing or Reducing Driver’s View

    ;)

As I said in post #91 here:
    http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-ii-...alifornia-tint-law-sucks-bye-bye-tints-_.html

... don't go into court quoting web pages ... quote the code, or your judge might just have the bailiff 'encourage' you to never come back.

The 1st paragraph of Code 26708, subdivision (a), number (1) may say you may not apply any material to the front side windows, but look at subdivision (d) (further down in the link):

So it's not true tinting the front side windows is not legal in CA, as you claimed in post #19. You just need to stay above an aggregate of 70%, which is possible on clear, untinted glass on cars of yesteryears, but not so much on the Prius.

Is this a case where the AirBlue would be beneficial? It passes Ohio's windshield tint laws for total transmissivity.

Ohio's law allows 50% aggregate for front side windows, so yes AirBlue would be legal in Ohio (75% glass tint x 78% AirBlue visible light transmittance for an aggregate of 58.5%), but technically still not legal in California as it is below 70%.

The Prius windshield is already tinted 80% in the factory glass, nearly the same as AirBlue on untinted glass, but you're extremely unlikely to be pulled over in Califonria for having AirBlue over factory glass since it'll still be extremely light.

LOL, UV doesnt go though glass, so tinting against it is pointless, but I am wondering why you would tint your own windows when you can take it to a professional to have it done properly with a lifetime warranty against bubbling?

I had mine tinted darker than legal cos it looks cool on a black prius.

Would you care to inform us which wavelengths of UV radiation are blocked by the glass on a GenII and GenIII Prius and the percentages of opacity associated with the wavelengths? I don't mind learning something new even if the message comes with a wise-nice person coating. ;)

I live in the Phoenix, AZ area ,you may want to find someone that
uses 3M tinting film ,I had my2010 done with 3M Chrystaline on the windshield and back window and 35 stable on the side windows, my objective was to have the highest heat rejection and light tint on sides, clear on front and rear. This combo works great.

I asked you to back up your claim and you produce another wise nice person post. Nice.

    ..............................................
Ultraviolet radiation penetrating vehicle glass: a field based comparative study

    M G Kimlin et al 1999 Phys. Med. Biol. 44 917-926

Abstract. The solar UV transmitted through automobile glass was measured in the field in two cars using a spectroradiometer. The two cars were identical except that one of the cars had all of the windows (except the windshield) tinted. The measured spectral erythemal UV on a horizontal plane with the windows fully closed was reduced in the tinted car by a factor of 42 when compared with the erythemal UV measured in the untinted car. The ambient UVA irradiances at various locations within four different makes of car and a tractor were also measured with a broad band UVA hand-held meter. The average normalized daily UVA exposure (measured with a broad band UVA meter) was 1.3 times higher in a large family sedan when compared with that in a small hatchback and the UVA exposure in a car with tinted windows was 3.8 times less than in a similar untinted car.

well, do you think I carry the information around in my head? why ask me when you can google it? Plus you said you didnt mind a wise-nice person post, not that either of mine were.

geeze... some people want everything just handed to them don't they.

I think the only ones to worry about are the ones that get you a nice sunburn, and of course everyone knows they don't go through glass.

    Most glass absorbs the short wavelength UV (UV-C 190 - 280 nm and UV-B 280 - 320 nm), but transmits the longer UV-A (320 - 400 nm) radiation.
The UV-B is the erythemal region that causes sunburn and skin cancer. Most auto glass is safety glass that has a plexiglas coating to prevent shattering. Even if a small amout of UV-B were to be transmitted through the glass, it would be absorbed by the plastic.

So you should not get sunburnt inside your car, unless of course you leave the windows down and hang your arm out.

Come on, kids. This place is starting to sound more and more like a MkIV Jetta Forum.

In all honesty, Roger, forum etiquette dictates that when a prognostication is made in a post, there is some sort of citation to back up the statement.

If I declare "Bagels are bad" without providing a link or two in order to back up my statement, then I lose all credibility.

With respect to topic at hand, there is more than UV that needs to be blocked, such as IR and heat, as well as any possible glare-reduction benefits.

I would have dad, but glass blocking uv is common knowledge and hardly needs backing up

If you can't get sunburned from the sun coming thru the glass of a car, I wish you would let my legs know that. I wore cutoff's drivng North out of Florida with the AC running and after a couple of hours I was burned so bad I had water blisters on my legs. I don't get in the sun normally because I do get sunburned so easy. I'm one of those guys you see on the beach with jeans, a big brimmed hat and a long sleeve shirt on.

Most of UVB and UVC yes but not all of it nor does it block much of UVA. Like I implied before, get your facts straight and back them up. UVA is known to cause skin and collagen damage and possible other side effects. Sunburns shouldn't be your only concern....

Fetal oxygen deprivation during birth also seems to be a serious concern these days.

Hey guys just curious I spoke to my tint guy and I have a silver prius and I wanted to do metallic tint all around however he said that it might interfere with the GPS and electronic components for the car. Is there any truth behind this? Does anyone have pictures of there car with metallic tint? Thanks in advance
