My local deal wants to charge me $229.95 to do the 30k mile service. That seems high to me since it's just changing the oil, changing the engine air filter, rotating the tires (which I don't need since I don't have the OEM's anymore) and some inspections. I will be out of my 3 year warrenty on 2/18. What can I skip? Am I being gouged? Thanks!
Yes. My dealer charges $69 for the services you need. Too bad it is a long drive to Grenada Mississippi. (You want tire rotation every 5000 miles as long as you have anyone's tires)
Thanks! I just replaced the tires at Costco 4+k ago. They will be the ones to rotate my tires. My stupid dealer rotated the OEMs at 25k and then told me that I needed to replace them ASAP. I wasted $10 on the rotation.
You can save even more money by changing your own air filters, engine and cabin. They each take two minutes (max) and require no tools. Many dealers have generic maintenance packages that include things some car models (maybe all) don't need, and sometimes even things that can't be done on certain vehicles, including the Prius. Best is to ask for specific service items as prescribed by your car's maintenance schedule (see your manual) rather than "[x],000 mile" maintenance.
I did ask the service department specifically for the Prius. That is the price he gave to me. He confirmed that it was oil change, tire rotation, air filter and inspection. I told him that it seemed a bit high for the work performed. He had no comment.
At minimum, you need to have the engine oil & oil filter changed, and replace the engine air filter and cabin air filter. The latter two you can do yourself if you wish to save money. The tire rotation should be done free by Costco since you bought your tires there. At 30K miles, I'd say you could pass on the inspection. If there's anything seriously wrong they'll let you know for free.
